RWS M54 maintenance

Dear Friends...kindly advise me on the following..reg .22 RWS M54 side lever/recoil less

1. At what intervals to use felt cleaning pellets in order to clean the bore...if I have to use a
pull through..then the gun must be cocked and the cleaning material to be introduced from the
muzzle end..is that okay..is it okay to shoot two cleaning pellets at a time..will this cause a piston
slam..

2. When to lube the chamber and with what available Indian oil/lube..kindly mention make...RWS
recommends only RWS chamber oil...almost impossible to import...

3. When to lube the breech seal and with what lube...or should it be lubed at all..

4. When to lube the main spring and with what oil...how much to be used...the stock has to be removed
in this gun to gain access..

Well P K,
These RWS M54 are all lubed up when they are sent out from the factory with a speacial long lasting lubrication, therefore you will not have to worry aboute lubricating the chamber or the seals for at least an year or 2 if you use the guns regularly. But they will get spoilt if you do not use them regularly.

Just wipe it with a clean cloth after each session of shooting and shoot 2-4 felt cleaning pellets after 1-1.5 thousand shots.... That should do it.
I don't recommend shooting 2 cleaning pellets at once though its will not cause any problem. Also pull through is not recommended at the fibres of the cloth sometimes get stuck inside the barrel and harm the accuracy.

please remember the local condition of rain humidity etc which would effect all metal including steel. and you can never over oil a barrel.

some company recommend their own products, this can be good but lets face it its called marketing, other are out there which can and do just as good a job.

local gun oil is just as good if imported ones are not to be had.

Actually you don't really need to clean air rifle barrels much. There is hardly any damage that happens through regular pellet shooting. A lot of times it is just sales hype. Long as the internals have been taken care of a swipe with an oily rag over the barrel after use is enough.

What is actually a must is a good storage case and some silica packs in it to keep moisture away.

1) cleaning once after 1k shot is fine
2)no chamber oil is required .
3) if the breech seal is rubber based then pure silicon oil can be used , a drop or two for 1k shots is more than enough.
5)the manufactures lube is enough for the spring ,not advisable for lubing spring.

Hi Jeetesh,

1] Do not use felt pellets with your magnum springer. They simply do not offer enough resistance and will damage your gun eventually. Felt pellets are primarily intended for PCPs and CO2 powered airguns. This may be contrary to the advertising, but its true. Google around and you'll see.

2] Though Air Rifle barrels do not require cleaning too often, you can use pull thru wipes. Always insert from the breech end to avoid damage to the crown. Depending on the quality of the pellets you use, this may be done once every 2000 shots or so.

3] Most of the internals in the Diana are self lubricating and you don't need to worry about it. A full lube can be considered if you tune the rifle. Else a drop or two of chamber oil every 5000 shots is all you need.

If the rifle is new, thoroughly clean the barrel with a pull thru wipe. Do not reuse the wipes. If you lube your pellets, then there is no need to lube the barrel. Unnecessary lube in the barrel will cause inaccuracy.

When not in use, it is good to attach a small bit of double sided tape at the muzzle end to prevent debris from getting in.

As for the exterior, the locally available gun oils are quite alright. Just don't overdo it. A quick wipe with wherever there will be skin contact is all that's needed.

Mo...some information regarding chamber oil...availability...make etc., Indian of course

Same goes with Striker...bt Silicon oil...is it the same as chamber oil...

Dev...could you help with this...long as the internals have been taken care of...what exactly does this mean

I hope im not sounding too demanding...the gun is a beauty...I want it to last forever...

After reading all about RWS maintaining stuff, I immediately decided to try out my RWS 48/52 (.22) I half expected the chamber washer/seal crums to fall out pieces as I had not shot through this air rifle for last 6 yrs. It took some time to locate it which I did, thankfully well preserved. What amazed me was that the gun shot beautifully into 1/4' at about 12 meters and the scope had not lost it's zero either. Man am I happy!!!! This "permenantly lubed at the factory" business seems to be absolutely true. I have decided to work this beauty out at least once a week now. It still needs to be broken in and I am ashamed to admit this to dear IFGians because I had brought this one in pesonal baggage from Dubai way back in '91.
