Help required from Mack The Knife...Gunmark350

Post by pkjeetesh » Sat Jan 03, 2009 11:12 am

Dear Mack The Knife...I have a Gunmark350 which I purchased in November last from GSmith...a lot has been talked about this gun in the past...the manufacturer claimed at the time of delivery that it puts out 900fps of power...with an effective flat shooting range of 80m..the power plant and barrel length is the same as that of the IHP ie. 360mm and 380mm, diameter of both is also the same...only that he claims to have used a Diana spring with a conventional leather washer...the actual size of the Diana main spring is 259.08mm x 34 coils...the gun has come a cropper ....cannot shoot even 30m...trigger is match type...plastic...and direct...muzzle brake came off 10th shot...Diana rear sight vertical adjustment rotates on its own with every shot and comes off...please let me know whether any gun with the above specifications can really boast of that sort of velocity before I throw the gun back at the manufacturer...or is there any problem with the gun...im building a sturdy spring compressor...now that only a replacement is possible ...no money back from them...I want to do something with this gun if anything is possible...Rs.14,000.00 + 3000.00 (travel from HYB to Pune) = Rs.17,000.00 is what I spent on this worthless piece of equipment

Sounds like you got taken for a ride! If the gun is still in warranty, please contact the manufacturer for a replacement/ refund.

If the manufacturer responds in the negative/ does not respond, take the matter up with your local consumer forum.

BTW, you may be on a sticky wicket as 900 FPS DOES NOT indicate power, merely muzzle velocity. If that muzzle velocity is reached with super light pellets, it serves no purpose. Power is indicated by muzzle energy which is usually denoted in ft/ lbs (foot pounds) or Joules.

More often than not heavier pellets producing lower muzzle velocity would produce more muzzle energy (in the same gun), and more importantly they are usually more accurate. Do not take this to mean that you should use the heaviest possible pellets! Every airgun has it's own pellet preference (even within the same model range), with which it gives the best performance. Also, it may produce more energy with one pellet but be more accurate with another brand.

Cheers!

Dear Mundaire....thanks a lot for the information...sorry bt the power thing...just missed it...its actually velocity that im talking about...so you say that ...based on the info I provided...this gun will not do 900fps even with the lightest pellets...going by the power plant size?...I tested this gun with Gsmiths .22 flat heads, the lightest...there was no carry...I knew I could be taken for a ride (read risk) ..because the fellow did not show any similar model before I purchased this gun..one look at it I would have survived this ordeal..I had to take the chance because there is no other Indian gun that can boast of say atleast 800fps...all the other imported guns that I have ...have larger power plants...he has agreed to replace the gun with another one..im not too sure if the new one will respond...according to him ...there could be a leakage caused by the extra heavy compression of the Diana spring..the leather washer may not be holding up and air could be retreating backwards...please let me know your opinion on this

Hi pkjeetesh,

Your best option, in my opinion, is to take the replacement and then sell it wthout firing a single shot from it.

Technically, even if you put a plastic pellet and get 900 fps, the advertised velocity is correct. Without the projectile specification, you cannot gauge the rifle's power simply by speed.

Anothing thing : I am not impressed with leather seals. They dry out too fast, and you can detect that something's wrong when it fails to dent the target you shoot. You put some gun oil in to help the seal recover, and the thing smokes with every shot. The power lasts as long as the seal is soft and pliable. Literature says they last for years, but mine didnt make it beyond a few months.

If I got myself another springer, it would have the PTFE seal that is the standard today. Its much more consistant and resistant to the elements. Should get much better shelf life.

thanks Tarat...

...Mack The Knife...Im a little taken aback by your reply...I mean thats the easiest thing you can do..replace then sell...but Im interested to know why a power plant of this size with whatever good spring will not do good fps...even a one line answer from you...I'll be happy...this particular gun shoots crazy when oil is used ...Im not too sure whether it is the swelling of the leather seal or the detonation which is causing it...the power last till about 35-50 shots...the gun begins to go limp after that...but will the leather seal last this way...the spring is stronger...

Tell the people at Gunmark to refund you the complete amount or you will file a case under the Consumer Protection Act.Take your money and buy something better. An IOF .22lr will only cost less than 30,000/- and would be money well spent compared to this piece of overpriced junk.

Mack The Knife...Im a little taken aback by your reply...
Then you are in for a real shock if and when we meet - I am not in the habit of playing the angel online and the devil off it. Be practical. You have been sold a product that does not work as described and I see no point in wasting your time and money on the second one. For all you know the replacement may just be ticketyboo. So, point the buyer to this thread, after which it's caveat emptor!
but Im interested to know why a power plant of this size with whatever good spring will not do good fps...
Do you have a chrono? Assuming you do and you have verified muzzle velocities on which you base your complaints, the reasons for the gun not performing to specification can be one or more of the following:

1) Improper barrel block to transfer port alignment - loss of air and consequently power.
2) Worn or improper breech seal - loss of air and consequently power.
3) Worn or improperly sized piston washer - loss of efficency after the initial dieselling or detonations. It's the detonation of the oil that is causing the pellet to fly faster and not the efficient air compression of the piston washer. If its a case of detonation as you say then your piston washer is most probably knackered and this may be your fault for introducing relatively larger amounts of oil at what I think is ridiculously frequent intervals. I wouldn't be surprised if your main-spring is broken either - usually into three bits.
4) The size of the cylinder needn't necessarily mean that the swept volume is the same as what you are comparing this gun with. It could well be short stroked, though inadvertently.

Mack The Knife

Dear Penpusher...like Mack The Knife rightly put it... caveat emptor...almost ... ( thats me) ...Gunmark did not put anything on paper regarding the said velocity/power etc....I went by the positive reports in this forum bt this gun...this is the only gun that I purchased that went awfully wrong...I'll live with the learnt lesson..

Hi Tarat,
I use only leather seals in my 4 airguns and they work fine - I change them only when I feel that it needs a change (which is usually once a few years. I have had no problem with them performing. My National .177 infact had the same spring & leather seal for 15 years before i changed them and till then they performed well. You should try lubricating sparingly and with the correct oil combination.

Having said that I have not used PTFE and so cannot compare or comment on that.

Jeetesh,

Have you spoken to Gsmith about a refund ? If you dont do anything about your situation, the Gsmith people would have really had you. I know its easy to preach than practice...but give it a try man. Do any of these....

- Ask for a full refund
- Ask for and buy stuff from him (you need) for an equivalent amount over a period of time, say a year, sort of a credit.
- Get another G350

And of course if all fails then go to consumer courts

Dear Manish...Just give me sometime...I'll try...I havent met one arms dealer in India who is honest and keen on doing something to promote the sport..except of course Aimco..its my fault following up and looking for a gun that was never there...

And Sniper...lubricating sparingly and with the correct oil combination....can you explain more...how much and what combination...

IIRC there was only ONE positive report on this particular air-rifle posted by one member here. IMHO one report by one member does not constitute a large enough sample to say that there were positive reports on the forum. One report (good or bad) is not enough information to go on, especially if one is being asked to pay several times more (than what others are asking for similar products).

Anyhow, I wish you all the best in resolving this particular situation. I am sure other IFG members/ visitors will be watching carefully for the Gunmark/ G Smith response...

Cheers!

Dear Mundaire...you are right...there was only one report from one member...the member even volunteered to visit Gunmark and follow up for a new gun if I wanted replacement...I did not mean to blame the forum for this...as I have already mentioned before ...It was my fault...I apologise for the loose statement....
