Re: Importing Arms & Ammo into India
hi puneet
i would personally suggest that you get an indian license prior to landing with the gun.or else, the customs seize your 357 and will give you a 90 day time frame to produce a license and failing to do so will ensure that your beloved gun being alloted to an MP for few thousand rupees.an indian license in 90 days is highly impossible unless you have good contacts.just my personal opinion
cheers

Importing Revolver from USA into India
Hi all,
I am currently in USA and would be returning back home in a year or 2.
I am very much interested in Purchasing a revolver and get it back to India
FACTS:
- I do not have Firearm license in India
- I am not a part of any shooting club.
I will be getting a USA Firearm Permit soon and am planning to get a revolver along with it. I will return back to India maybe after 1.5 yrs or so ...
A few questions:
1. Any suggestions on which revolver I should get ? looking for a handy one.
2. Will I face any legal issues at the airport ? (Ofcourse i ll have the USA permit with me). I understand that the firearm will be confuscated.
3. Will the fact that i have a USA license for the firearm , make it any easier to obtain a permit in Pune , India ?
4. Any idea whom to apprach for the Arms license in Pune ?
5. Any lawer etc who can help with this ?
Also overall for a novice like me ... do u feel its worth the trouble getting the revolver back ? what are chances of getting a permit in India ?
Your response will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Nuwazish

Re: Importing Revolver from USA into India
hi NNP
my option would be a 357mag revolver.
you should own the revolver for a minimum of 1 year.
a transfer of residence makes you eligible to bring a gun.
you cant sell it,transfer it or take it back once it comes into india.
i dont have an idea about a lawyer in pune but it is good to apply well in advance as the customs give you 90 days to produce a license which is pretty short time in my opinion.check the legal section for more info and visit www.cbec.gov.in and check the travellers info section under customs.

Dear Nuwashish
Well certainly a very good idea is to have a revolver in the US and get it back with you. You can choose from an array of good manufacturers like S&W, Ruger, CZ or Taurus. I would personally if in your place would have loved a S&W Performance Centre revolver in .357 with 8 shots. Regarding barrel lenght again it a question of personal preference. Regarding choice of caliber I would suggest that you weigh in your options like what would be the primary purpose of your revolver. If you intend to do a lot of shooting then my humble suggestion is that you chuck your option of .357 as the bullets are hard to get and also expensive. go for a .32 or .22. If it is for personal defence then settle for either .32 or .357. And don't forget to pick up ammo in US. You can carry ammo with you which would be of a much better quality than those normally found in India and also cheaper.
Well at the airport you have to declare your revolver and the arms. You need to fill up the form and keep your papers ready. Like the purchase voucher, your revolver's manual (it comes really handy), and if by that time you have got your licence. If you don't have your licence by that time you will get 90 days to produce the same.
Well I sincerly doubt whether your US arms licence would be of any help here in getting your licence. It would be better that you apply now and under the category of "sporting purpose" since "personal defence" would hardly make your life easier.......... to consult a lawyer is a big no no as per my suggestions but I think that some of our MH members can give you very good guidance.
N.B.- If you are not against the idea of pistols a very good manufacturer would be Glock. Don't forget there is no prohibition regarding capacity of magazine so pick up a good one and also atleast two spare magazines.

Re: Importing Revolver from USA into India
Hi all
I really appreciate so many replies from you all. (Especially since most of the information is already available in other posts)
I will plan to come back to India for some time as suggested by Badshah.
Also Jayanta and Indian ... thanks for your responses. Once i decide on a firearm, i ll trouble you all once more to make sure its not a Prohibited Bore (I ll ofcourse read up on it too )
2 last questions if thats fine with you all
1. Is there any way I can apply for a license for myself , while I am here in USA ?
2. What do you think is the probability for a normal person to get a Indian Arms License ? (Pune \ Mumbai). With my past experience with corruption in India , I am not very confident of me getting a License
Well , i ll stop it here. Do more reading in other posts and get back if i have any questions.
Thanks a lot

step back and think. you are asking for an arms license issued by one country while living in another. i'm not sure there are many places in the world that would allow this, specially for civilians.
2. please refer to past posts on arms license and members' experiences/opinions on the matter. there ave been a recent discussions on TR as well

Re: Importing Revolver from USA into India
Hi NNP,
Answers are in order of your questions:
1. Ideally a .357 Magnum Revolver for self defense (ammo for this is available infrequently and very expensive), but for target practice a .32 H&R revolver, which is capable of also fire .32 S&W,.32 S&W Long, and .32 ACP which are available in India. For even cheaper practice a .22 LR revolver.
2.When I imported my pistol on TR in 2003, after all paper work was done, the exporter sent my pistol by U.S Postal service. For the permanent export of a firearm from the U.S.A there is a lot of paperwork that is required. It is not as simple as putting it in your baggage and bringing it here. When you declare it at the check in counter in the U.S, if you are on an international flight, they will ask you to produce the export permit/license. This process is for all legitimate exports, if someone has been able to slip through, that does not make it legal.
3. I don't know if it will be easier to get a license on this point alone, but the USA license is anyway one required proof of legitimate possession in the USA for clearing Indian customs.
4. Local DCP's office for the application, but if you use influence it will be easier.
5. any competant lawyer in Poona should be able to help you with the local paperwork but this may not be required.
Please go through the posts regarding import of arms and ammunition this will be very helpful. Also as far as the indian customs go, please be aware that:
1.A return on TR of at least 2 years is compulsory for the eligibility for firearm import.
2.The total time spent in India during this 2 year time frame must not exceed 6 months, either at one time
or in pieces.
3.Only one firearm of NP bore and only 50 cartridges will be allowed.
4. Proof of ownership/possession such as Hunting license,Concealed carry license, purchase receipt must be
produced for clearing customs.
4.The firarm must have been owned by you for at least one year before it can be imported.
5. This firarm cannot be transfered, sold, gifted or otherwise parted with for the duration of the importer's
natural life.
The chances of being given an Indian arms license while you are abroad are slim, you see you will have to be present for the interview(s) and follow up on the paperwork. Also while getting a license can very hard its not impossible. You will just have to find a way.
The export license/permit from the US needs some paperwork from India as well, so a good plan is to visit India say 6 months before you return for good, and get an Indian license and the paperwork organised for the import. If you need any more detail please PM me,
Regards,
Anand

Might I ask if you have a license for firearm in India? After pouring through the information here it seems it is quite an involved procedure, especially for a non-citizen. I have lived in India for 1 year through, 3 separate times. I had trouble finding what determines your residency. Thanks for your response.

This might be the wrong thread. But I decided to post anyway? Is there any movements or initiatives to relax arms law in India after the Mumbai attack?
