Mack The Knife,

There is nothing wrong with Acer except their after sales service is poor but so is that of others. I am writing this on an Acer and have a couple more Acers at home. Keeping your requirements in mind I would definately go for the machine tenX has recommended over the used one. In any case the used machine you mention is nowhere near the market price for a used machine today. If you are looking for a longer warranty pay a little more and Acer will sell you one. The result will still be within your budget of 40k.

Cheers,

Brainiac

Once again, thanks for all the responses. Would I be right in assuming that I should not being pay more than Rs. 25,000.00 for this particular laptop, assuming the remaining two years of warranty is transferable or should my offer be lower still?

Incidentally, should one take the CNET (Asia) reviews with a pinch of salt or are they a reliable source?

Thanks.

Hi Mack The Knife:
I was out scouting today and saw a Compaq Presario that seems to fit your bill.
Presario C773T2 with a core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Disk and all the usual etcetras.
It has DOS as the operating system so you can load XP or Linx.
It's on sale new with warranty. The sticker said 36,999/- I'll PM you the dealers location/take you there if you want.

Ashok, are you sure about the model number? I cannot get a match on Google. Any idea about the processor details?

Thanks.

Mack The Knife: I think I got the model number right (I wrote it down there itself). Still, shall cross check at the Reliance Mall on Cunningham Road tomorrow.
I saw the Presario at SPAR - a hypermarket on Bannerghatta Road, quite close to the Dairy Circle.
It was a Core 2 Duo Processor, didn't get the Mhz.
The C700 series is mentioned on the Compaq India website.
Shall update you tomorrow.

Mack The Knife:
I've mailed you a link to the specs. The model number is
C773TU (not 2). There's nothing special in the Bannerghatta Road price, any dealer should be able to match it.

I took a short stroll through the Croma Mall today to figure out the mystery of the mysterious C773TU :)

It appears Compaq/HP is trying to push the newer, more expensive, CQ40-145-TU. the latter is retailing for 42 K rupees (versus the earlier 37 K) and boasts a 2.0 gig Core2 Duo processor (vs 1.8 gig)/a 200GB hard Disk (vs 160 GB)/ Vista Home as OS (vs DOS) and an addition Bluetooth reader.
Compaq and Acer had the best value-for money Core 2 Duos around.

Hope everything is now clear as mud :D

... frankly, the way you put it, Mack The Knife would have gone back to the cathode-ray-tube-diode radios :)

Thanks Ashok and everyone who pitched in on this thread with their suggestions.

I have decided to go with the Dell Vostro 1510 configured to my needs.
