Hi everybody,
Was viewing a website

http://209.85.175.104/search?q=cache:wF ... d=40&gl=in

They have shown the list of wepons consficated in 2006 & part or 2007.

They use the term Katta & Tamancha - I thought they were one and the same thing -

Can anybody explain the difference bitween the two of them.

897 Kattas recovered in MP - Must be where they are made. ("Police sources say that certain pockets like Dungarpur in MP and Etawah support an illegal-firearms manufacturing industry. - http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/arti ... page-1.cms)
428 Kattas recovered in Delhi - Must be the primary market.
275 Rajasthan, 57 in Haryana - Secondary markets... :)

Tamancha
450 in uttaranchal - production and warehouse
77 in Gujarat - Primary market
47 in UP - Secondary market :) :)

But what these exactly are, waiting for more knowledgable guys to input...

What my understanding is Katta is a single shot crude pistol, usually chamberd for .38 or .303 Caliber, also known as Single Shotter (I saw some of these Katta's in CFSL during a project) No Clue about tamancha though :?

What surprise me, the other fireamrs category with a shocking figure of 1626 in West Bengal  dont know what they mean by Other Fireamrs which does not fall under any of these category..By any chance are they considering Air Guns too, as Firearms ????

my impression was that tamancha was hindustani for handgun, evidenced by it's frequent use in hindi literature (chah goli dagney wala tamancha). kattas were/are crude and illegal handguns ("jnkon dekhney par apney desh ke kaarigaron ki kushalta par rona aata tha....Shrilaal Shukla, in Raag Darbaari"

Matter of fact, I am no musician either, nor is Hindi my native. Just that my uncle, who gives occasional performances, who lives his life in music, wanted some help in downloading music. I helped him out (as net-savvy member of the family) and thus the comment.

BTW, if you would want to download some wonderful (and supposedly rare) collection, check out http://www.ecse.rpi.edu/Homepages/shivk ... index.html

This Mr. Shiv Kumar has made a wonderful collection :)
Hats off to him...

Shamsher, the best people to ask about these two terms would be the folk in Muradabad ;) My experience with such devices is zero, so cannot offer any comments at all :P

BTW, as per what I have understood from the report - "other firearms" would be those produced in the organised sector, whether in India or overseas. Some would be arms looted/ stolen from police armouries or even license holders but the majority are likely smuggled firearms...

Cheers!
