The Good doctor landed a fish-finally!

Post by eljefe » Sun Oct 22, 2006 3:25 am

Dev and I broke our jinx. 8)
At 2-10 pm today, he landed a 1 1/2 kg Cat fish on a worm-hook-lead shot weigh and a few min later I landed my first catch in 30 years-a previously discussed and predestinated 6 incher , again on the same formula.
The secret weapon was -dev's father-I guess :D
The location was the Hindon barrage, about 6-7km from Noida and the exact spot was our favourite ' Toxic greens' The fish seemed to have a normal appearance and visible organs-exact degree of mutation was not recognisable
A jolly good time was had by all, included in the guest list were several local fishing stalwarts, whose technique consists of using old oil cans as a spool and huge hook loaded with a single lead shot for weight and about a dozen worms on each hook, hand cast. They have about 3-4 lines each and sit contentedly in the shade.
My tackle box with its assorted lures/spoons/homebrewed bucktails etc was star attractant-however, noticing my plight, one of the locals immediately dug out and donated a huge hook (a 2/0 atleast!) tied it onto my line and made me cast-few min later, strike-a perfect, much vaunted 6 incher!
The brotherhood is alive everywhere in the world-Last trip with Mack The Knife made my tackle box a couple of kgs heavier with stuff he loaded on, now these guys...I'm glad I didnt let them down!
The local contractor issues fishing licences for 10 rupees a day and unlimited catch.
I have snaps of Dev and his catch on my phone-am yet to get around to downloading with Bluetooth.Shall post fortwith, as a technology demonstrator.
Inder?

Good show, Asif and here's to many more.

Did you guys move along the bank or cast from one place only?

I have noticed that cats seem have their favourite places and usually not to far from the bank and if you find it you could be guaranteed non-stop action....say, a catch every 5 minutes or so.

Look forward to the pic. Pity you did not get one of yours. Incidentally, I trust you did not release the cat back into the water?

You`re fishing a place called `Toxic Green` and checking the fish over for mutations ? !!!
`Yuck` doesn`t begin to describe what I`m thinking !
Mind you, I once fished the Blackwater in Fermoy, Republic of Ireland, a well known Salmon River; Chucked the ledger in about 60 yards and, when I raised the rod to check the tautness of the line, discovered that it was covered in tissue paper streamers - pink, yellow, green and white ! I don`t think I`ll explain any further........................!

Reading the posts after a 4 day hiatus...
Yes Mack The Knife-back it went ASAP.
We were on a spit of land projecting into the water and didnt do too much for waxing forth-probably about 10m for me, 50m for Dev.
Spent 3 hours casting on the ganga near a place called Pratapgarh-160km from Lucknow yesterday.Water level was 5-7 feet and had to do some frantic reeling to stop from foul hooking these droves of turtles-6-8inches in dia.
Not a nibble-but got the wife and daughter onto a country boat and gave them a glimpse of my madness.Wife, being an ex yank, commented about "all the hi fundu Yank lures wont work" and bang went a bite-reeled in another 8 incher-dont know what-it wasnt a chilwa-the boatman had a local name for it which I couldnt pronounce then and wont attempt now.guess I had time of my life. 8)
Daughter was frantic that I dont catch a whale-she's onto "Jonah the moaner" bedtime stories...
Its happening folks...
Grumpy,
Why do you think its called "Backwaters"
Naaw, There must be more toxic areas-We call our fav spot toxic greens-the line and hook stay intact most times but the lead SG shot i use as weight does come out lighter after a session of casting...
Best

Hey Gr888 Pic Asif,

Nice to see family sharing the interest. Nice to hear about your exploits. I am yet to inaugurate my fishing rod. Will do that when I ll be back in INDIA and I think I also need those Rusty's fishing lessons ... :)

Keep up the fun work m8

Hey Inder,
good to have you back
You were right, Mehr grabbed the frog lures you gave me and I got them back only a few days ago-her fav 'scare people' toys!
Hows the US? strip searched yet;)
Sure, go down to Shiva with King Rusty and 500 casts later , your cast will be better-and if you catch some fish incidently, smile-you went there to learn!
No great exploits-been on the run so long, could not resist joining the family for Eid-They had gone to lucknow and then when i landed there as a surprise for Eid, we decided to go to the ancestral village-what the 'ell, air deccan broke the lock ring of my flambeau tube -after putting a 'delicate' sticker on it!
Hearing all my moaning, wife decides to spring me for a new one-with a new rod- as the old one may compress and break the rod etc ...sounds good, eh? next thing, I'll have to pass on my rod to the daughter and look for a bamboo 'charri'
Best, have a great time

Told you sir,

You know I always check where my daughter is before opening my tackle box. She just love them. :) .

Yep, Joining WASI is the first thing I am going to do after coming back and regarding Strip searches none yet but the gentleman at the immigration counter at Chicago asked me "Can you please remove that hat" when I asked him Is that necessary. He just said "Not really, but do you ever remove it ". I think he was curious than anything else..

Don’t tell me about “Air Dhakkan”. Bu$$ers lost my luggage two times. Now I made it a point not to travel with them again  .

I once flew London, Paris, Frankfurt, Milan, New York with just a couple of days in each place ( until New York ) and my baggage took two weeks to catch up ! Every place I landed I rang to enquire where my luggage was and it was always one airport behind.......until I got to New York when it decided to go off on a completely different trip. I`d ring every day and be told it was on its` way.......except that `on its way` included Rome, Berlin, Paris ( again ) and LA !
Good old BA. ( ! )
Having watched baggage falling off the elevators as it was being put on planes at La Guardia and O`Hare this summer I`m not surprised that things get damaged although I`m sure that the worse damage occurs `behind the scenes` before it gets on the carousel.
