My almost new HW 80, 0.22 cal

Post by karandheer78 » Tue Aug 05, 2008 1:06 pm

Hello fellow shooters…..finally bought an almost new HW 80 in 0.22 cal (& don’t ask me for how much coz that’s a negotiators secret! 8) )

Would have put about 700 pellets through it & the gun seems to be dieseling with a “thwang” kind of noise. However, the noise & smoke is far less than what it was some days back so I guess it’s settling down. I am too much of an amateur to form an expert opinion on such matters, but the 1st cut on this is:

1.the gun is heavier than the RWS 350 which I possess in 0.22 cal. Please note: I said heavier..did not say “unbalanced”. In terms of balance, both are equally good.

2.the gun has a shade lower power than the RWS 350 – as of now that is.

3.Cocking is BEAUTIFUL. The action is really smooth & user friendly & it’s still new to boot! So I guess with usage it’ll improve further.

4.The RWS is definitely sleeker in appearance. It looks & feels like a lethal viper whereas the HW 80 looks more like a boa constrictor with a thicker girdle

5.Comparing the same stage of RWS 350 Magnum, the HW 80 seems to be more accurate but noisy. However, I will reserve my comment on this for some future date.

6.The “kick” in the 350 magnum is awesome. I miss that in the HW 80 to some extent.

7.In terms of penetration (at about 20 mtrs), the 350 scores over the HW 80. However, too early to conclude since the 350 is close to 8 months old & the HW only 8 days yet.

8.Since both my rifles are open sighted, as yet, the RWS 350 scores by leaps & bounds over the HW 80 in target acquisition. The front sight pole in RWS 350 is super sleek & therefore assists in better target acquisition. HW 80 has a bit of chubby front sight pole.

9.Bluing is deeper on the HW 80.

10.In pure aesthetics, the RWS 350 looks faaaar better than the HW 80. Also, the checkered grip on the 350 does assist in a better grip on the weapon.

My questions to the IFG gurus & other shooters who own / are better informed about the HW 80 & it’s temperament are:

1.Any special care to be taken apart from the usual oiling / lubing as deemed necessary?

2.Any recommended scope which can be used for this rifle? I have given up hope on fixing one on the 350 since it has a reputation of eating scopes. I would prefer keeping the RWS 350 open sighted & would look to scope the HW 80.

3.Does the HW 80 always have a “thwang” noise to it? Compared to the RWS 350, the noise is atrocious. Any way to reduce this?

4.Any solution to the chubby front sight pole? (apart from the scope of course)

Currently, I am using the following pellets in the HW 80:

•G Smith – high impact & high split
•Gamo Pro Magnum penetration
•H&W Diabolo waisted.

Surprisingly, all pellets are firing quite accurately in the HW 80. The G Smith high split gave horrible results in the RWS 350 which is not the case with the HW 80 currently.

Looking forward to your views & comments…cheers!

Congrats Buddy,

HW benifits a lot from the right tune so I suggest you order a Venom kit for it and you feel the difference. You didn't write anything about the trigger.
What do you think about it?

congrats karan. that's a good gun you have with you, and IMHO, miles ahead of the rws350 in quality

1. keep it away from moisture, in this weather. a light patch of oil runnbed on metal parts after shooting

2. the hw80 is also a scope eater, much the same as the diana. so choose a heavy airgun recoil scope with good mounts with stops pins. try to find the old post with a link to high recoil resistant scopes. i'd think the bushnell legends and elite are great, so too the simons pro air series.

3. is you gun imported from the u.k.? in which case it would have been modified to sub 12 muzzle velocity, which makes the gun uncomfortable to shoot. i think dubai and american imports are full power versions. as kanwal mentions, a venom tuning kit will go a long way. is this a brand new version? in which case, is it a carbine or full length?

4. by chubby front sight i assume you mean the globe front sight, which are often more popular than the single posts in your diana. i've found aiming better with the globe front sight, and helps greatly were you ever to fit a diopter sight. if you want it out, simply unscrew it from the groove it sits into using a screwdriver. i don't know if weirauch does post sights for the hw80.

as for looks, who says the hw80 is anything but gorgeous

aaah...the "REKORD" trigger...hmmm..well off the rekord it really feels like a normal one! maybe i haven't tuned it well as of yet..One more thing which i felt was better in the RWS 350 was the "push in" safety mechanism rather than the "push across" safety. However...still discovering the HW 80 & it's nuances.

karandheer78,

Prior to 350, did you use any other toys? wondering when you say "rekord it really feels like a normal one!" And hardly you need any tuning to do.

Hi Tirtha.. well I have had my 1st Diana in 0.177 when I was in 8th std. Somewhere down the line, i flicked my dad's Crossman Medallion II, 0.22 pistol & the madness carried on for the next 8 yrs or so. Post that there was a lull (the usual career building et all) & it's now got revived since the past 1 yr. A yr back I took a 0.22 local made rifle, followed by a 0.177 IHP, followed still further by a 0.22 IHP (gifted tht to a friend). Acquired a 0.22 RWS 350 in the midst of all these. Had a fleeting romance(1 day) with a HW 80 before my cousin took it away from me (Karma I guess for flicking my dad's 0.22 Crosman :x ) & recently got the HW 80 once again.

Frankly: Have not found anything great about the HW 80 trigger as of yet. Of course, the steel feel to it is surely good but apart from that..nothing much.

Cheers!

Thanks for the comprehensive answers Hami... The answers to some of the questions u have raised are:

3. Nopes...the gun is a full powered one from Dubai. It is a full length one & not the carbine version.

Naah...I somehow prefer the single post that Diana offers. Most of my targetting is done open sighted at around 30 mtrs. The globe sight covers a larger portion of the target & therefore makes it all the more difficult to fathom the accuracy. However, will take your opinion & search for a suitable scope for the gun.

Cheers!

Firstly Hamiclar01...thats a fine looking piece u have there!

Karandheer78,I too own both the 350 mag(in .177 with a spare .22 barrel )and 2 Hw80's in .22 and .177-which I sold recently much to my regret.I find the HW80 much smoother to cock and shoot than the 350 mag-which is very gritty to cock and quite a brute on discharge which I hope should settle down after usage.

Its quite surprising that u seem to have a noisy HW80 and maybe it could be a problem with the internals.I am not suggesting that u have a bad apple, but get the same checked by a good gunsmith. If u need help I will send u details of the person u can get the same checked by here in Bombay-just to make sure everything is ok!
Anyways enjoy the HW80,IMO its what all springers are judged by!

Take care!

my error! caught on the source of sound today...the trigger guard was a bit loose...tightened tht n the sound vanished. The accuracy's getting better with each passing day.

Cheers!
