Re: .405 cal winchester 1905 model,
can get a 405 for 35000 in excellent condition with 10 cartridges. that's an obsolete calibre weapon, cartridges are pretty expensive and difficult to find.

Re: .405 cal winchester 1905 model,
That's a model 1895 Winchester, not a model 1905. As to cartridges, they are being loaded by Hornady. With a bullet weight only 3/4 of equivalent NE cartridges, it lacks penetration on the big and thick-skinned ones. Consequently, Pondorro didn't recommend it, hence its bad reputation with those who have never used it. Teddy R., according to those he hunted with, was actually a lousy shot, having very bad eyes. The .405, with standard loads, and it can be handloaded to equal the .450/.400, crumples charging grizzlies in a very satisfactory fashion; I have several friends who will carry nothing else when grizzlies can be encountered. The model 1895 with its standard stock is not at all kind to the shoulder, though. It's not something to plink cans with. Cheers.

For a 12 year old , that Under lever , with its multiple moving parts and images of cowboys and indians, was a great attractant. I used to spend hours examining the moving parts. And the cartridges looked humongous.
Stories abound about the 'glitterati' usage of the 405, from Teddy R to our own Anderson. It may have been good on soft skin herbivores here in India, may be even the sloth bear.I doubt if there is anything more than anecdotal reports about its usage on DG.
Cape buffalo? Hoo boy...
Yup, may make for a super, minute-of-dinner-plate bottle buster
Hey R Dhillon, when I was 16, I must have read Wren & Martin atleast 5-6 times, cover to cover, so its never too late to start.
