This kind of fire arm which was usually endorsed to cover one's license temporarily has now moved on from obsolete to practical. The U.S.A. has rediscovered this favorite caliber of their president Roosevelt and have started making ammo for it all over again. It would be worth it if you managed within 50-75K with a batch of fresh ammo..

but no Cape Buffalo's here.An over hyped cartridge according to Grumpy.Lacks the knock down power you would wish for if you get into a sticky situation.Had read somewhere about a fellow who used to make movies by getting so close to the animals that they would be provoked to charge and then he would shoot them.He was killed by a rhino whom he had shot with a .405.The .405 did kill him but still gave him enough time to trample the photographer / hunter.Teddy Roosevelt used the .577 for buffalo.

Yes, but 30-40 years old that would be sold to you as fresh ammo. for about 300-400 rupees per cartridge.

If you are desperate to empty your pockets...fresh ammunition by HORNADY is available in Delhi @ Rs.600/- each+ VAT. Fresh would mean 2 -3 years old import.

Lovely rifles but original examples are collectors pieces and making GOOD money now if in excellent condition.
Goodness knows what price such a rifle might make in India.......which doesn`t exactly follow the trends in the rest of the world.
Ammunition IS available commercially and reloading dies have been available for many years.
As has been pointed out, I`m not a great fan of the .405 Win. By American standards at the time of it`s introduction it was a powerful cartridge....but hardly suitable for dangerous game and a bit of a pipsqueak compared to most of the NE calibres.
As with any rifle/calibre, a great deal of the degree of success attainable depends on the shooting ability - and courage - of the person shooting the gun......and Teddy Roosevelt was both an exceptional shot and a man with a proven record of bravery.
A very nice rifle to own and shoot and a calibre that is adequate for most game........pretty well anything edible anyway.
Make a man a fire and he`ll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he will be warm for the rest of his life.

Other than corrosive primers I do not see an issue with 30-40 year old ammo.
I have some ammo that was manufactured in '37 for my Mauser and it fires just fine. I do have to clean the rifle properly afterwards though.

As for the effectiveness of the caliber, given that hunting is now banned in India, it will kill you soda can/paper targets just fine.

I am curious about the final price of the rifle though... do let us know.

A 405 Rifle by Winchester should not be that expensive .You should find one in the price range of 35-40K.Last year someone on IFG sold his DB 405 at about 65K and it took him ages to find a customer.
