Incidentally, "The form in which the licence is required" is point number 13, not 12.

Hi all,
Seasons greetings to all. I need some information on licensing in Bangalore. I've moved to Bangalore from Chennai and am here for the past three months.
How to apply for an arms licence here for target practice? Do i need to be a member of KSRA or any rifle club here. In Chennai, i was told that a person gets an arms licence as soon as he/she gets enrolled in the rifle club. Please advise me on this.

I recently enquired from licensing authorities, Delhi about Retainership.

They require full background check and application shall be on a new arms license form in case the applicant for retainership is not a arms license holder.

In case, the retainer already has an arms license, then the application can be made on plain paper.

Hi there everyone, this is Anirban. I am 18 years of age and I‘ve just passed out from St.Xavier’s school in Kolkata. I take great interest in shooting although I am a complete novice in this field. I want to possess a gun primarily for target-shooting and private security. I have a few questions regarding gun ownership in India and I hope you guys can help me out. My questions are

1) Firstly, am I old enough to possess a gun?
2) Is there a need to undergo training before applying for a license? I mean, can they refuse me a license because I do not know how to use a gun?
3) What are the type of guns for which licenses are given in India? What gun do you guys think I should start off with? Please suggest.
4) Lastly, I was going through the form of application for an arms license and I would be grateful if you could explain the following points:

a) The forms in which the license is required (point number 12 in the form)
b) De.scription of the arms/ammunition (point number 13)
c) Area within which the applicant wishes to carry arms.(point number 14a) I mean, can I apply for the license to be valid throughout India?
d) Place where arms/ammunition will be kept/manufactured(14b). I presume it will be my permanent address. Will it not?
e) Other particulars required as relevant in the license form (15).

there is two way to get revolver license in anywhere in india
1st:-kindly read info in leagal eagle.

2nd:-in trash can read badshah 's article it's not ful leagal but work in some state in india.

manu is correct you can get the details there but be careful while giving statements to the officer from police station give it neeeeeatly, so that the report is submitted in your favour. Best luck.

Yes, I think you can apply for a firearms licence but re-check this point with the concerned authority.

Unfortunately, in India one does not need to be proficent in the use of firearms before applying for a licence. However, you would benefit from lessons on safe gun handling, marksmanship and maintenance. Join your local shooting club.

You can apply for a shotgun and/or handgun and/or a rifle. I suggest you start with an air-rifle or air-pistol. These do not require a licence.

4) Lastly, I was going through the form of application for an arms license and I would be grateful if you could explain the following points:

a) The forms in which the license is required (point number 12 in the form)

Non Prohibited Bore.

b) De.scription of the arms/ammunition (point number 13)

Non Prohibited Bore Breech Loading. If you want a muzzle loading gun, replace 'breech' with 'muzzle'.


c) Area within which the applicant wishes to carry arms.(point number 14a) I mean, can I apply for the license to be valid throughout India?

Kolkata District in your case or if you are feeling lucky, then try for West Bengal. For All India Licences you need to apply to the state Home Ministry. These are not easy to come by but if you do a lot of travelling within India and can show a need to carry the firearm with you, then they may consider giving you one. However, do not apply for one immediately as it will complicate the application and may even lead to a denial.



d) Place where arms/ammunition will be kept/manufactured(14b). I presume it will be my permanent address. Will it not?

Yes. This is assuming you will be residing there.


e) Other particulars required as relevant in the license form (15).

Not too sure about this point but I had mentioned 'Nil'.

Welcome to the forum.
One opinion of mine is, decide on what tpe of shooting you would like to pursue, and plan to possess relevent arms and equipment for that. If you like Trap & Skeet, then a DBBL/SBBL permit is good. If its Pistol shooting, then a .22 or .32 handgun permit, or if you would prefer the .22 rifle, go in for the .22 rifle permit.
Eitherway, I am assuming you would be interested in competition sports, and hence the above few lines. There are also Air Guns and related competition; a cheaper challenging engagement which does not need a license too - good for starters to get to 'know' a gun with minimal investment.

Since this thread is less of an intro and more to do with applying for an arms license - it's been merged with the relevant thread.

Rusty seems to have covered most of your questions, for more details check out some of the older posts in this thread as well as the articles under the "Legal" sub-section of the "Knowledge Base" here.

As to point no. (1) - you need to be 21 years old before you can apply for an arms license in the normal course. This used to be 16 years but IIRC was amended in the 1960's to 21 years.

In the case of sportspersons you can still get an arms license for your particular discipline(s) from age 16 onwards. You would of course need to submit relevant certificates, testimonials etc. proving your bona fides as a sportsman.

I concur with the others - first get an airgun and learn safe & proper gun handling prior to acquiring a firearm.
