God knows what all is there in the bismuth shot. Let me fetch a Ducks Unlimited magazine to check the ads of remington federal and WIn.

Not used in these parts. In India and here in Dubai on the skeet ranges still chilled lead shot.

Here you go - Remington Premier Hevi SHot Nitro Magnum

Tungsten, Nickel, Iron. 10 % heavier than lead. 54 % heavier than steel shot. 1 1/4 oz load. 1325 fps.

Winchester Supreme. Steel coated shots. 1450 fps.

No ads of bismuth yet.

Kent say their IMPACT Tungsten Matrix can be used in older nitro proofed barrels.

Yep Bismuth is plain bismuth no additive alloys. It is tungsten matrix that has alloys in it.

Tungsten Matrix is Tungsten powder - and a few other additives - mixed with a polymer. It is not the same as Tungsten/Tungsten Iron or HeviShot.
Tungsten Matrix is safe to use in English barrels but unfortunately it is appreciably lighter than Lead and the performance suffers accordingly.

But Remington claim in their ad it is 10 % heavier than lead. He is the maker. SO who's right ?

Oh you mean KENT tungsten matrix. Is that lighter than lead ?

"The 2 inch steel pipe will burst on firing a punt load."

No, this is a good quality 50 mm steel pipe with 12.5 mm thick walls. It`ll easily handle 1/2 lb black powder shot loads. I`d have it proved first anyway but there`d be no risk of it failing.

Yes, Tungsten Matrix shot is lighter than lead.
Tungsten and HeviShot are heavier than lead.

If the pipe is seamless then fine. What will you fire it at ducks on the sea front ? Geese ? Canadas ? With what a load of 2 pounds of BB ?

Where do you live in England Grumpy. I will be there in London and Birmingham again later this month.

Been looking for some Roe Deer shooting closer to London. Say Middlesex, Wokingham area. Any links ?

I live in the South West of England.

The only summer deer stalking is for Roe Bucks.
You could try www.deerstalker.com as they are based in the South East.

As I said, I will probably never get around to making that punt gun - and even if I did, it would only be for the hell of it. I`ve no desire to shoot Ducks by the dozen and there`s nowhere around here to use one anyway. Punts are too dangerous to use in estuary conditions because of their flat bottoms and low freeboard. The wetlands around this area aren`t shot over and the Fens/Norfolk Broads are much too far away.......especially if towing a boat and a 6 ft long punt gun !
I don`t know about 2 lb loads for a 2" Bore punt gun.....1/2 a pound would be more likely.

South west, Devon ? There's some brilliant wing shooting in those parts.

No, not Devon. There are no wetlands of any consequence in Devon.

Not ducks. Heard of some good land game in Devon area, Pheasants, Partridge, Grouse.

Punt Gun

Here is a short clip of a Punt Gun in action against clay pigeons.

Clip is safe for work, but there are many inappropriate adult themed graphics around the boundary so be careful when you open the clip.

Mark, what purpose does a blunderbuss's 'funnel' shape serve?

A blunderbuss is a close ranged weapon, the belled muzzle is supposed to open up the shot pattern to make it more effective against multiple opponents.

Thanks, Mark. That's the first time I have seen a punt gun in action.

What kind of boats were these usually attached to? Would it need to be a flat bottom boat?

Mack The Knife

P.S.: What size shot did they normally use and what amount of charge? Ta!
