My New CZ457 17HMR

Post by Martin Clarke » Wed Nov 10, 2021 8:08 am

Hi Everyone,

Have just bought a CZ 17HMR Model 457 American, with a Vixen 4-16x44 Scope (Made in Japan).
Attached are pictures for viewing.
Bore sighting is done, and intend zeroing it this week-end.
Have also bought 5 boxes of ammo - 2 x CCI 17Gr Varmint, 2 x Hornady 17Gr Tipped, and 1 x Hornady 20Gr HP.
Will have to see which one works best.

Cheers.....Martin

That's a nice looking rifle, Martin! It looks like it will be a great pleasure to shoot. Best of luck!

Hi Timmy & Eljefe,
Can't wait to sight in; I have not fired it as yet. Will do so this week end.

Eljefe, good idea; but would you have to re-license after reaming to 22H.

Cheers.....Martin

Hi Everyone,
Sighted in my 17HMR and was amazed at the accuracy. Group sizes :
******6mm for 5 shots at 25M with CCI 17 Gr. Varmint (HP) - all in one hole
****14mm for 5 shots at 50M with CCI 17 Gr. Varmint (HP) - 2 shots touching all in the 10 ring
Also tried CCI 17 Gr. Polymer Tip, Browning 17 Gr. Polymer Tip, Federal 17 Gr. HP & Hornady 20 Gr. HP - all worked well, but CCI 17 Gr. (HP) was the clear winner for my rifle.
Back to the gun shop this week-end to buy as much of the same batch as I can, and to buy/order steel mags, as the one which came with rifle is polymer.
Stay safe & happy shooting.....Martin

Martin, it looks like you have gotten a winner! I could think of some uses for aa nice rifle like that.

Thanks Timmy & Eljefe,
Ideal for bunnies, feral cats and foxes; can confidently head shoot now.
Any idea why soft points are not made for this caliber. Could do with more penetration.
Just a thought!!

Congratulations on your new rifle Martin Clarke!

Good wood furniture. The Canadian one sells for CA$630 to CA$670 in 20" and 24" barrel lengths. 17HMR is a nice step-up varminter from 22LR.
Is your Mag capacity 5+1?

CCI produces quality ammo and they do sell 17 HMR Gamepoint 20 Grain Jacketed Soft Point, priced about CA$22/box of 50

Enjoy!
