Navdeep,

I'm never too busy to go shooting. :D

Moving to Illinois has meant mostly shotgunning because of the problem finding ranges here, but now that I have a new rifle, I have to plan to go to Bristol WI, not far at all from here, and get some shooting there. In any case, I have four rifles that have not been shot much if at all, two open sighted and one scoped and the new one which will be scoped soon. SO I need to go with friends and have a good day punching paper. 8)

The best shooting is at Mark's place, but that is a bit too far to go for casual shooting. I do wish I were closer to his place, though, as his experience would be of immeasurable value to us if we could consult him on fine tuning rifles, loads etc and also on technique.

Cheers!

Mehul, when you say "your club" which one is that, Naperville ? If so, then maybe I can plan to meet you there around 11am or so. I can pick up Inder on the way or you can too as I'm sure you know exactly where he is put up. Let me know if it is another club so I can bring my hand loads and not have to buy non toxic ammo.

I hope Amit can join us too.

PS: Mehul, bring over your rifle too, we can atleast see it.

Sharief,

Yes, Inder is right - I'll be at Naperville. Let me know what the programme is.

Will be happy to bring the new rifle along though there is no place thereabouts to shoot it.

Cheers!

Navdeep,

Didn't have to wait much - these guys were fast on the draw and fixed the programme for tomorrow - I start my club service but they would meet at Inder's room followed by a round of trap at the public range in Plainfield.

On Sunday Amit is busy but Inder and Sharief are going to get some shooting at Naperville while I have my whole day's club service. I guess these guys are going to be busy!

Hope to have some pics/videos. Will post them here of course!

Cheers!

Mehul,
Nice rifle. You can't go wrong with a .30/06. Now you will have to come to Wyoming & dust a pronghorn antelope.

the birth place of 30-06 is USA (springfield)
one of the most well equipped rifles with a damn powerful muzzle velocity
it was developed to ensure proper sound :hit ratio
so that the bullet could hit the target as soon as it heard the report of the rifle, the purpose was to avoid wash-out in case of alive targets like wolves etc

Somebody has been telling you fairy stories Rudra.
The 30-06 was developed as the US militaries standard calibre - nothing to do with `sound:hit` ratio or Wolves. The .30-06s velocity with all bullets is considerably faster than the speed of sound which is only approximately 1100 feet per second at sea level. A 30-06 bullet will always hit before the sound of the shot reaches the target. A 30-06s bullet has a velocity of between c. 2410 fps ( 220 gr ) and 3140 fps ( 125 gr. ) That means that a 30-06 bullet will take between 1.68 and 2.2 secs to travel one mile - sound will take 4.8 secs to travel the same distance at sea level, the time increasing with altitude.

HI! perhaps this will clear some confusion:
This cartrige was approved for induction into the US Army in 1906 and its caliber is .30 hence it became known as .30-06 : the -06 identified the year as there were several .30 cals cartridges. The springfield armouries was one of the sevral contractors making these rifles for the US Govt. as most of the rifles milsurp M1 Garands we see in India are captured ones from the paki(stani) army in bangladesh and were manufactured by the springfiled armoury the phrase 30 springfield has got coined to denote the .30-06

There`s a little confusion here: The Model `03 Springfield rifle was introduced chambered for the `.30 calibre ball`. This cartridge, known generally known as the `30-03` had a round nose bullet and became obsolete very quickly due to the introduction of the `Ball Cartridge, Caliber .30, Model of 1906` with a spitzer bullet. The term `Springfield` in this instance properly refers to the M `03 rifle.
The term `30-06` was really introduced to differentiate the cartridge from the US militaries previous cartridge, the 30-40 Krag.
All three are .30 calibre - as is the 30-30 Winchester ( Originally known as the `.30 WCF` ) - as indeed is the 7.62 NATO - .308 Win. - and several others.
As far as the military was concerned the 30-06 was always referred to as the `.30 Caliber` as this picture of boxes of ammunition taken in 1942 shows.

It was my fault :). I should have cleared the whole story in my last post itself.
The place where the cartridge (30-06) was invented was a locale full of shepherds, (dwelling on the bank of a river with a forest on the other side) many of whom were gunsmiths by profession. Returning from work they used to find their sheep missing. The reason behind the missing sheep was the attack of wolves. When they would fire at the wolf on the other side of the river, the report of the rifle gave them a jump and result used to be a complete washout. Now to clear this up they decided to develop a cartridge which could hit the target, a little before the sound could reach them (or almost at the same time). So this gave birth to the cartridge we know as 30-06. And after this as grumpy said it was used by the US army

Rudra, amigo, quite a believable yarn and I would like to believe it :) .But,facts and history are two of the most irritating spoilsports in this kind of settings. Please do a reading before sharing this kind of info.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.30-06_Springfield from the good old w'pedia.

Supersonic bullets well precedented the 30/06 and wolves were shot with both supersonic and subsonic ones. The 30/06 was developed for the military.thanks. :)

Best-
Vikram
