Hi,

I would like to know if IOF or any other shotgun manufacturer does make 20 gauge shot guns? Also what are the price ranges of 20 gauge sbbl. are pump actions available in india?

is the ammo costlier? how much approx.

Pump Action shotguns are manufactured by IOF but not for civilian consumption &
the IOF does not make 20 Gauge guns.
AFAIK I dont think they are made by the Jammu & Munger gun makers either.

i was reading a little about the comparisions between 12 gauge and 20 gauge..

Good point that i noted was that a 20 gague would be a better better for home defence, as its slightly lighter and the damage by a single shot may not be fatal...

if no one makes the gun .. how come IOF sells the ammo.. are there so many 20 gauges in the market??

Twenty gauge was sometimes seen as a beginners gun or a ladies gun for shooting sports in most of north India. Though I would prefer it anyday to a 12 ga for field use. If you contact some of the dealers from IFG they may come up with something really good - a 26 inch side by side from the 1950's. The Bharatpur Maharajas collection had a lot of 20 bores so they must be floating around somewhere in Rajasthan, MP, UP etc.
Incidentally the shooting accident involving Dick Cheney and friends was with a 20 ga. pump action.
Before making more enquiries you may want to check whether the local authorities will give you an arms license.

Does IOF make 20 Gauge ammo ( cartridges ) ? I don't think so. Maybe they do. All I have come across so far is 12 gauge and 16 gauge by IOF.

Yes, IOF used to make 20 Bore Shotgun rounds.

We at our shop had received supplies once. The stock has already sold out a 3 to 4 years back.

For now, IOF is not booking fresh orders for 20 Bore. They have removed this item form their dealer price list.

Comparision - for skeet or trap.

Lighter gun, easier to handle but even in O/U more recoil due to a lighter gun. Yes suitable for ladies but a ladies gun for non serious ( non competition, just sporting fun ) would be the 28 bore.

Today the shot load in 7 1/2 or 9 is the same, 24 grams or 7/8 ounce.

Powder charge is also the same. SO effectively range also much the same, same velocity etc.

The vital difference. 12 ga has a better charge density and shot pattern because of a larger diameter.

A narrower barrel has a longer shot column. Shorter the shot column, better the pattern.

At 30 yards if 67 % of the shots go into a 30 inch circle with 67 % in the top half of this circle then the pattern is most desirable.

In countries where field sports is still allowed, for land game shoots, the 20 ga is gaining more and more popularity these days, in many areas. USA / UK.

Continental Europe, particularly France and Spain still have 16 bore users in great numbers. But the 16 bore is on a decline phase in most other places with the 20 having taken over in a large number of cases.

The popularity of the 20-Bore for field use continues to rise year after year. All the main manufacturers offer 20-Bores - they have to as they would loose so many sales otherwise. They`re popular because being lighter than a 12-Bore they`re easier to carry around all day long when rough shooting although nowadays many use them for driven birds also. There`s not that much difference in performance when using 24 gram loads compared to a 12-Bore using 28-32 gram loads......providing that you can shoot straight anyway. Using slightly tighter chokes can compensate. Magnum loads in a lightweight 20-Bore are decidely unpleasant to use and pretty pointless anyway because for the same shot weight a 12-Bore has superior performance.
The 16-Bore has enjoyed something of a revival in the USA in recent years......which has been reflected in the prices of used British 16-Bores which have climbed somewhat and are no longer considerably less expensive than a comparable 12-Bore..............although a comparable 20-Bore makes more money than either.

Price of ammo outside India would be approximately the same for 12/16/20 for 1 oz, 1 1/16 or 1 1/8 stanard loads.

Not in the UK it isn`t - 20-bore cartridges are always more expensive although the differential is much less than it used to be.
By the way, 1 oz, 1 1/16 oz and 1 1/8 oz loads correspond to 28, 30, and 32 grammes - all hefty loads for a 20-Bore. 24 gramme is probably standard nowadays although 21 gramme ( 3/4 oz ) used to be normal.

Even in US the 20 Bore costs morethan the 12 Bore.The 16 Bore costs lot morethan the two.They do not cost the same out of India.


Shahid, your information, is it based on your experience in Dubai or UK and elsewhere?
