what is the ideal barrel length for home and self defense?

hello dear friends,
actually i have a arms licence and in that i have endorsed a sbbl and i got permission to buy npb pistol/ revolver .....but hear is my query ....i have a shaktiman folding but 20.5" barrel sbbl shotgun ,the gun is very handy,light weight(about 4to5kg),simple in use.... but the problem is when i fire even kf ammo no.1 shot it give me kick like mule ......so i can not aim properly now can anyone suggest me what is the appropriate barrel length for self defense and which company's sbbl is good?
