I think there is more to it than just the lawyers. After WWII the loads were fairly reasonable, both Winchester and Remington loading to 2570 fps, with their 170 gr. .32 Win Special bullets. Flat and blunt round nose. Neither load fed very well, being a bit short of what the M98 magazine was designed for. Then they reduced the velocity to 2470 fps, and finally to 2330. Though Winchester is now loading a decent semi-pointed bullet of .322" diameter. Haven't seen what shape of bullet Remington, or Federal, loads.

But ask yourself, would you, producing rifles and ammo, with great numbers of rifles coming into the country in a chambering that equals your best-selling .30-06, go out of your way to market loads that would do the rifle and cartridge justice ? Undercutting your own rifles ? Not if you are an American manufacturer.

.401 WCF ammo has not been produced by any major manufacturer in a long time, it is obsolete. Only occasionally have small runs of cases been made by smaller producers.

Oh. Just discovered that .311 is 7.92x57 ( 8x57. )
I would have thought that would be much more likely to be 7.92x57 I than 7.92x57 IS however but the changeover was 1903/5 and I didn`t think there were any Suhl built Gew.98s built before 1914.

Grumpy, what makes you think the rifle was built pre-1914 ?

Both are .311 bore in military rifles. The grooves were deepened until by 1895 they were .006" instead of the original .004" deep. Civilian bore dimensions differ slightly since they used a bilateral tolerance, =/- .03 mm, rather than the Prussian arsenals' positive .05 mm.

Well, let me jump in too.... that 8mm could have same head size as the 30-06, i believe they still have the ammo. Or some old cases..

I would, well I still have all my fingers....... get the bullet out of the cartridge, should they (inertia hammer) but don't try it with pliers.

Fire the round , without the bullet, well get the half the powder out too, and you get the chamber dimensions to start with.
