My Cheap Little DIY Spring Compressor

Post by GNV » Fri Apr 17, 2015 3:42 am

I have been itchingto disassemble one of my two ORIONS and see its internals. So I visited a local wood shop today to see what I could find for my project to build a cheap spring compressor. I selected the wood I need from their scrap pieces. The wood is neem. They cut the wood to my specifications, planed and sanded it using power tools. The total time taken to do that was 15 minutes. They charged me 170 rupees for the whole thing. On my way home I visited a hardware shop and purchased a 5 inch steel
C-Clamp for 120 rupees and a couple of 8 mm x 2.5 inch long Bolts with Nuts and a dozen washers for 40 rupees. Once I got home I cut off one arm of the C clamp using a hacksaw and drilled a couple of holes in the c clamp and in the base board in pre determined position to fix the clamp. Then I applied fevibond glue to the Airgun receiver back stop and guide riles and nailed them in pre determined places and fixed the C clamp in place. Then I had a coffee and smoked a cigarette and by then my spring compressor was ready for use. First used my compressor on a scrap Kolkatta made air rifle to whether it is working properly or not. Then I disassembled my ORION. The photos are attached.

Very nicely and neatly done job done.
Just a thought that came my mind, as I have no idea of the pressure that the spring would be under when you are releasing it, that maybe you should have some sort of additional clamp to keep the cylinder is place and prevint it from slipping out once your C-clamp comes out of the cylinder and the spring is still under pressure.
Or just tape/ tie the cylinder to the fixture you have created.

Regards

I simply placed my left hand over the cylinder to hold it in place while releasing the spring with my right hand. It turned out that the ORION's spring is not very powerful so there was no problem of the cylinder moving out of position. But it would be a nice idea to strap the cylinder to the jig because one would not know how powerful the spring might be until one releases it. Thank you.

Dear GNV,
Nice work !!
I have seen other where 4 holes are made parallel to receiver and clamped with 4 fly nuts instead of woods on either side.

Dear BASu,
Thank you.
But I think wooden blocks along on both sides of the cylinder gives more support than metal clamps and wouldn't damage the blueing.
