Got my Chrony

Post by bennedose » Fri Mar 13, 2015 9:00 am

Being sick and tired of playing with Chrono connect on my phone I decided to ask someone coming from the US to get me a Chrony
cronybox.jpg
crony-open.jpg
The machine worked straight out of the box and I got some surprising results - which I will speak of after I do some standardized tests with my air rifles. For now I can only say that velocities are nowhere near what Chrono Connect used to give me, and the "most powerful" rifles are not giving the highest velocities. I have other ways of judging power - including ability to penetrate certain grades of tin cans so the velocity may be a red herring. Need to do standardized tests using the same pellet brand of the same weight in every rifle.

This looks like fun - more later

Looks nice. I have a Chrony too.
I've lusted after some of the higher quality (read more expensive) Chronos on the market but for the limited use that I make of it, I can't justify anything fancier.
I just use it to set up loads for rifles to check the consistency of my reloaded ammo. Once I have a load set up, I rarely use it with that particular firearm any more.
It is more than adequate and for the price is a good value. I've shot my skyscreen rods many times and have had to make substitute rods but it still keeps working. Luckily I haven't shot the Chrony itself. It just takes a moments inattention and poof, there goes a hundred bucks. :)

Looking forward to hearing your results and the comparison with the one on your phone.

Dear benne,
Very nice to know that you received the chrony.
It will surely unveil some mystries.
I wish that a comparision is made with chronoconnect as well as audacity.Your feedback will benifit many who do not have access the such authentic chrony.

Although I think its a pain I will take the trouble of comparing chrono with chrony. May take a few weeks because visitors at home who arrived at 3 AM with the Chrony will be here.

First of all congrats bennedose for this new acquisition :D
Now for all those "Velocity Maniacs" ....wait patiently till "Benne" does his field testing to reveal some home truths
Waiting with bated breath

Great acquisition bennedose..!!!
Now we can get to know the actual values of the muzzle velocity and energy for ARs (atleast Orion, IHP & SDB to start with) and compare it with what the companies claim.
Enjoy and let us know the results...

Well - doing some incredibly boring stuff now.

My usual shooting area has so many echoes that Chrono connect simply fails. So I am measuring out 10 and 13 meters in a different area with fewer echoes (can't get more). I then need an accurate measurement from muzzle to phone and flight path of pellet to phone to get an accurate chrono connect measurement. Will record the sound for audacity calculation. The chrony bit is the easiest. I hope I don't shoot the Chrony in the process - but I'll do my best.

I already have a fair idea of the "power" my rifles are giving based on the ability to punch holes in a specific brand of tin can at 25 meters. Obviously the weight an brand of pellet is crucial here but thankfully all my rifles are accurate enough to hit that can from 25 meters in 2 shots out of 3. If velocities are much lower than expected - it will not change the reality of power - it will simply prove that velocity and power have no meaningful correleation unless weight of pellet is considered.

Nice. This is designed for Airsoft, but is probably fine for air rifles. The Chrony thing that I got has specific instructions for velocity measurement of firearms including shotguns and measures velocities up to 2000 meters per sec. Of course my requirements are well under 200 meters per sec.

Words from the wise indeed! ;) I think almost everyone who has owned/ owns a chrono probably has shot it/ or some part of it - some time or the other! Of course if the rifle is any type of centrefire rifle, you can usually bid adieu to your chronograph!

Cheers!

Some preliminary rough figures - using my lightest pellets to generate highest velocities. Those are 760 mg (11.7 of Her Royal Majesty's grains) Marshal shot flat head in 5.5 mm (0.22)

SDB 65 - Average 180 meters per sec with Chrony
Precihole Orion: Average 175 meters per sec with Chrony
IHP 35: Average 150 meters per sec with Chrony

In general Chrono connect readings taken simultaneously were about 10-15 meters per second lower.

My Orion and SDB are giving me about 11.5 to 12 Joules that is about 8.5 to 9 of her Majesty's choice fpe

Need to check in different lighting, different conditions and heavier pellets. But I will not cross compare with Chronoconnect because in my shooting area I can eithet get light+echoes or trees above + no echoes. Chrony does not like trees. Chrono connect does not like echoes.

Oh by the way - I successfully shot my Chrony and dented a bit of metal - but it's still working.
