What is the best blade Type: Ceramic Blades or Steel Blade ?

Post by harshit89 » Mon Mar 09, 2015 12:33 pm

There is always a question about the type knife blade which is best for self defence and can be taken along with you to outdoors.
One option can be the ceramic blade knives which are light weight and durable but they are costly and fragile as well.
The other option can be the stainless steel blades which are very effective in cutting and are less fragile. But they are gets dull easily and need sharpening after a time period.
I want some suggestions about the best balde type: Ceramic blade or Stainless Steel blades ?

At this point in time it still is metal. Ceramic will hold an edge better but they still get dull too and require resharpening, but the major flaw is they are brittle and can break if dropped. At some point in time that may change with improved materials but for right now a knife that needs to be depended on also needs to be steel, either stainless or carbon. Nothing wrong with getting a ceramic blade for the kitchen though, they do stay rather sharp and if one falls on the floor and breaks you are not left in a pickle.

Ceramics are quite hard but also brittle. May be good for kitchen knife or light duty but not for any hard work / survival.
Some learn by reading. A few by observation. The rest of 'em have to pee on the electric fence.

Hello Mark,

Thanks for the review.
The only flaw which I see with the ceramic blades that they are fragile and can break up if falls on the floor. And If then, they are the bad options to be taken to any outdoors survival too.

Hello, dr. jayakumar,

Thanks for sharing the link. It was informative and I got to know much about the pros and cons of the ceramic blades.
But till now I believe that the stainless steel takes a upper hand over the ceramic blades.
I recently got a stainless steel blade fixed blade knife.

That's true in every perspective.
You can't use the ceramics in the outdoors as they are fragile and only gets fits in your kitchen.

Depends on your need.

I use a Boker Cera as a neck knife when I go fishing. Its a beautiful ceramic knife and I have no fear of rust, corrosion.

And I also carry the discontinued Spyderco Caspian Salt. The combination is unbeatable. And there is no issue with Ceramic Knives. Yes they will be damaged if you abuse them. But all you have to do is be a little careful.

And as far as the kitchen is concerned, I have never met a chef who uses a ceramic knife. And I used to be one. The Chefs are pirates of the hospitality industry, real bad asses. And we only love cold steel :)

Here is a picture of me with the Caspian Salt around my neck. Will post pictures of the Boker Cera later in the day :)

I do agree that the ceramics best to be used as kitchen knives and its very tedious to use them for any outdoors survival trips.
And the stainless steel blade seems to be best to be taken along to the outdoors and for everyday carry.

You have not heard about these knife blade.
They are the best knives usually used for kitchen purposes and some outdoors men prefer to use them for camps as well.
