DIY knifemaking: 3 new blades

Post by astronomy.domaine » Tue Mar 10, 2015 2:01 am

Hi all,
sharing pics of 3 new blades completed recently.
1st set of pics consist of a compact utility blade with a clipped point and some spine filing along with a small sabre tip neck knife.Grips for both are formed using nylon chord over epoxy base.
2nd set of pics is for another clip point hunting knife with wood and epoxy grip.
Have a look! comments are most welcome...

Nicely done.
What steel? and how do you heat treat.
I made my first knife a few days ago and want to heat treat it. Any pointers. Thanks
Some learn by reading. A few by observation. The rest of 'em have to pee on the electric fence.

Hi ad,
Excellent craftsmanship
The wood handled blades are real 'eye candies'....
A brass 'bolster' where the handle meets the blade would have added an extra charm....just my 2 bits :D

Thanks Briha sir, RamMani and Anand.

@ briha sir: a brass bolster would surely refine the knife. its just that my drill is conked off at the moment and I was just too lazy to get the cutting/shaping done at the local smith. :-)

@ Anand: I generally use tool grade pretempered steel and at times SS as well. Don't do any additional heat treating as I am quite content with hardness in the range of 56-60 HRC..! Though i have tried tempering soft carbon steel couple of times but did not get satisfactory results. guess its more of an art that's perfected over time, to get the right colour/temp and quench combo for the selected steel type. IMHO not a good tradeoff between the time and effort put in and the results obtained..:-)
