How to maintain my new air rifle for getting maximum power

Post by Suyash » Sun Mar 01, 2015 5:22 pm

I got my first air rifle yesterday and I've enjoyed it very much. But even after using it for such a short time I realized that it'll need proper care. I want to know that how to clean its barrel (it produces smoke) And can anyone tell me which kind of lubricant should I use to get maximum velocity?
Also what is dieseling?? Thanks in advance for your help

I also want to know that why my air rifle is releasing smoke after every shot(even if bullet is not fired). Is it normal?

Smoking is due to the excessive lube, we can improve the power only up to certain extent, check your piston seal it should not damage due to the heat produced by the compressed air. Of course new guns may have this problem for some times. Name your gun and calibre, Shooting with out pellet is not advisable. Happy shooting.

often everyone asks for more velocity,power..for what?..all you need is accuracy if you are plinking.

First the bad news. No matter what you do there is a limit to the amount of "power" you can squeeze out of an air rifle. Those who want real power need to invest in a Lee-Enfield .303, but then that rifle does not take kindly to backyard or rooftop plinking. You win some. You lose some.

Air rifles need very little active care. Do not shoot without a pellet. Do not leave the rifle cocked for long periods. Do not leave it loaded and cocked. Do not fill the internals with lubricating oil. Periodically check that all screws are tight, but do not over-tighten thinking that it will stop them from working loose. Do not machine wash or tumble dry. In fact do not wash at all  Wipe dust off with a soft dry cloth. Follow safety rules while shooting.

At the risk of boring others I will link a primer video I made for you to see if you have not already seen it.

no its not normal, all that can be safely said that the smoke point of the lube oil is low or some how camphor found its way in the lube oil, you need to post the video so that experts can investigate or replicate the phenomenon.
may be we are on the cusp of new discovery , as it happened in the video below

Yes, an important point to keep in mind is not to "dry fire" your air rifle to avoid any damage to the internals. It must have been mentioned in the manual if you had received one with your gun.

Suyas - Please read the topics available in the forum and gain knowledge on the Airguns and their working principle of the same.
Atleast spend some time reading your AR manual to ensure safe and long ownership of a healthy AR.
Many of the question you have are very basic and they are discussed in detail in the forum, spend time and effort in going over them.
Do not expect people to respond to these basics.
This will keep expert members away from the thread and would eventually you would miss their expert guidance on more important and critical questions/ concerns you may have later.

You may have done some damage - but with a new rifle any damage would be less noticeable and any consequences may only show up later as reduced life of piston seal or damage to the screw holding the piston seal in place.

The spring is a very powerful one. When you shoot a pellet, air is compressed and the energy in that compressed air is transferred to the pellet. This process actually slows the piston down so it hits the end of the receiver with much less force. In dry firing the entire spring power is used up in banging the piston with the seal on the end of the receiver.

So thanks my friends. I think now I know enough how to maintain my AG. And as I said it was my first air rifle, and I didn't receive any manual so my questions were very basic. Any way thanks again.
