Youth arrested for buying 'gun' online

The boy needs a good lawyer who specialises in the Arms Act.

While this prompt action by the Chennai Police is absolutely unacceptable, the forensic experts, no matter how ignorant they might be about provisions and clauses in the Arms Act, may be in their right to describe a 9 or 8 mm PAK ammo as something that can be included in the Explosives Act. Simply because these blank rounds have a primer just like a real ammo; and powder, just like a real ammo. What they don't have is a projectile. In place of projectiles these rounds are sealed with a plastic wad. But the charge they carry are powerful enough to cycle the light alloy slides in semi-auto and full-auto blank guns.

However nowhere in the world are blank ammo considered real ammo because even the dumbest criminal mind would not take the trouble of manufacturing bullets, getting faster burning powder and reloading these ammo all over again to be used in real guns. Buying real ammo from criminals would be ten times cheaper and easier. After all, even the dumbest idiot will not claim that the police of this country are so efficient that there is not a single illegal gun or ammo in the hands of criminals and terrorists.

Now lets come to the Ekol revolver.
A standard blank gun is made of metals that cannot withstand the pressure caused by real ammunition. Moreover, barrels in most blank guns are permanently blocked with metal. And this is done in such a way that its impossible to drill out the block without destroying the gun.

Also, in blank guns that are described as front firing i.e. some flash and smoke come out of the muzzle (these are the ones preferred as props in films) the diameter of the barrel is far less than the diameter of the chamber. Also, as secondary precaution, some companies put in a thin cross pin running from one wall of the barrel to the other so that nobody can try to turn it into some kind of a blackpowder weapon, if at all.

So, if the so-called "experts" referred to in this news report know anything about firearms and metallurgy they will possibly never describe a blank gun as a firearm capable of discharging a self-contained cartridge that delivers at metal projectile and at certain fps.


If Chennai police has arrested this boy for simply ordering a blank gun online then all superstars of Tamil cinema should be arrested immediately because they regularly fire blank guns "that cause irritation or injury." It is a different matter that the same villains appear in the next film in new avatars.
I want to see Rajnikant and Chiranjeevi behind bars. After all the law should be the same for all citizens and the Indian Arms Act applies to all ctitizens in all states.

You made your point though, let the young man go home to his family - immediately - with all due apology - I mean real, abject apology! I could not find any other 'smilies' except that would suit this case!

And - then the keepers of the peace and law should examine the laws regarding this 'Diwali Gun' and hopefully they will understand that they have been acting like true morons and accept the fact! I am sorry I am repeating myself My sincere apologies!

The Chennai Customs seems to be totally ignorant on these subjects and bent on harrassing anyone they can lay their hands on.
I am sure already a letter/citation on the gallantary act of capturing illegal arms import would have been forwarded by them.

Same with Cochin customs. They won't go for arrests right away, but will ask you to send anything they think is part of a 'gun' to the forensics lab under escort, everytime. Plastic, metal, clay, imaginary; doesn't matter. And will proudly claim it took 6 months for the last person to release a 'gun' from them. Surprisingly, they do not cite any exim policy clauses to detain it. Their magic words are "Arms" & "Act". This kid might've had a better chance in Kerala, considering Chennai customs sometime ago classified all 'guns' toy or otherwise, as firearms. Well they shouldn't and cannot, but they did.
