I d say let the boy try a few of em and see what suits and fits him. I am sure between friends and family you will be able to find all the suggested calibers .
I dont dial 911... I dial .357

Yes, there's a lot to keep him quite busy now, that's for sure!

My choices for a milsurp for him would be my own (naturally!) which are a Mosin Nagant (I have a few of them and there's still a lot of cheap surplus ammo available) and an SMLE -- but not just any SMLE. I'd look for an RFI 2A for him, because he already has a .308 and could use the same ammo, while .303 is strictly commercial here these days. Every now and then, there is some old POF stuff that comes on the market, but it is notoriously unreliable. Anyway, while a SMLE is cool, I think the RFI 2As are cooler!

Here is the outcome: I got him a Ruger American in .308 with a Redfield 3-9x.

He seems happy enough! :-)
Hi Timmy,
I was following this thread but lost track.
How on earth could I miss this update !

Now that's a handsome boy with a great rifle. Wishing him many many shooting hours with the .308.
Best wishes for 2015 to the family :D

Thank you, TC, and I wish you and your family a prosperous and healthy New Year as well (whenever that New Year is calculated to begin :-))

So many miles separate us, but I look forward to spending some hot and dusty and some cold days with this young man at the range, and maybe even out in the field. I can't say, but I expect that my pleasure in watching him will be as great as when I was young and did these things myself.

We did get to watch him open the present on FaceTime, so even the distance between us was bridged in that fun moment.

Thank you so much Timmy. Our new year starts in exactly 4 hours and 43 minutes to be precise as I type this sentence :D
I can understand your feelings and how deep the emotions run. So, wishing you some hot and dusty and cold days with the young man very soon.

Regards
TC
