Blade Protection Oil

Post by supershaji » Mon Nov 10, 2014 9:49 am

Hello friends!

On my few blades and tools, I use regular oils like coconut oil as well as WD40 on some.

It would be beneficial for me as well as the rest of the members to know if there are any specific oils to use for different kinds of blades?

I hear that mirror polished blades could be maintained by special oil made by Hanwei, are such or similar products available in our land? And how about Ballistol oils (I see their ad here is hard to miss), any products from their range for "specific" blade protection?

Regards & thanks in advance.

Ballistol I find is exceptional when it comes to maintaining metal and wood. As oil attracts dust make sure to wrap up the oiled blade in a plastic bag for at-least 48 hours. There after we can wipe off the left over oil.

Blade Protection Oil

Oils form a protective layer over the blade and cut its contact with air, thus resisting/preventing rust formation. Thus you don't really need different oils/chemicals for different steels.

A blade that is used on food should have food-safe oil on it - coconut oil is perfectly fine. However any oil attracts dust and dirt, which can interfere with the smooth operation of a folder. For such cases look for a formula that lubricated but does not attract dust.

I find coconut oil to be most suitable as many times I use the blade for food prep.

Ulta seedha kuch lagao nakko yaron, kyon hawle chale karrai....

If you can spend, this is the best or else parachute nariyal tel works best, except on folders as it attracts too much of grime n dust.

Ayenge yaaron aap bulaiye to sahi :D ...

Doubt there is a comparable product available, ballistol may have some rust inhibitors but i have first hand experience. Try the tuf cloth. It's a proven product.

Yikes! "Ek-ich daant nikalne ka Moinbhai, battees ka battees nakko".

Moin, I once went to a dentist like that. Believed in saving money on anaesthetics!

I use normally the Parachute in the blue bottle (simple coconut oil without any added vitamins) - for knives, not teeth! Most of my knives are anyway etched with ferric chloride or Ballistol blue. After having to rub rust off so many of them in this typically tropical Mumbai weather, I made the choice between shiny and protected. Shiny, poor chap, lost!

I have a conference lined up in Hyderabad mid December. Moin, let's go together and freak out on biryani!
Cheers!

Brother, I keep as much away from dentists as possible. Unfortunately, since I was a rather recalcitrant kid and didn't listen to my parents when they told me to brush twice daily, I need to "victimise" myself from time to time.

No, this is a company conference, and HR, for once, has decided to have only half day meetings and working sessions. Got your number, will buzz you once I am in the city of biryanis.
Cheers!
