Inspired by this I did some shooting today at 26 meters which is about 30 yards, using an Orion.kshitij wrote:

My preferred shooting posture is handheld standing and I have no telescopic sight. At that range it is not easy to see a small target with open sights - so lighting and contrast are critical. While I will never be a champion shooter - my results were pleasing to me - the image is of a 5 shot grouping with only one "flyer" - all good enough for a beer can size target.
Obviously an individual can do something to improve his aim, but if the rifle, and more critically the pellets are useless, then nothing will work. Once again I was pleased with the performance of Diana shot flat head.

Sweet Shooting @bennedose. At 25 meters with open sights this is real good. I think next weekend inspired by you, I'll take my scope off and give the Hatsan Open sights a shot.

Re: Weekend Plinking with the Trinity
I am tempted to replace the one scope I had that broke, but I fear that I will then use only one rifle for longer ranges. My other air rifles (apart from the Orion) have no scope rails - but are sweet to shoot. For a strange reason my SDBs (both an old retired one and a newer plinker I bought recently) give me a great deal of plinking pleasure - I don't know exactly why. I think its them "medieval sights" that both have that I like Most likely - I think that given the power of lenses I use for shooting only, allowing me adequate near and distant focusing - the foresight distance is just right for me in both SDBs which have longer barrels than the Orion and IHP.

Medieval rocks bennedose. They give you far greater control on the gun. People who can shoot with open sights will find shooting with a scope a breeze. Doesn't apply the other way around though. Am sure it will take significant practice to shoot with open sights for me.

Also, rifles are far easier to aim than pistols. That five shot grouping above is better than anything I have done with a pistol at 25 meters at KSRA. 100% of my pistol shots do not necessarily hit a 2 foot square target at 25 meters
