Looking for a Pooch....

Hi Guys,

After years of thinking we are ready to welcome a new family member so If anybody has leads on pups from retriever family like Lab, Golden Retriever. Please let me know.

Just to let you know, I live in a 2BHK flat but have access to a big land parcel right next to my house. I posted here because I am looking for a pup from a home litter not from a breeder stock.

I presume you know what hip dysplasia is. You'd better make sure the parents of your pup from a "home breeder" have appropriate clearances.

Hello Kanwar,
Just thought that I could point out something important to you. Firstly its very good that you have a reasonable sized plot of land next to your building, this would provide ample scope for exercise. Your choice of breed is excellent, but if you happen to be staying in the upper storey of your building, just keep in mind, that when you bring the pup down for a walk, the climbing down the stairs for a puppy (regardless of breed) leads to tremendous load on the shoulder joints (this is while walking down). Once the puppy has grown to maturity, say approximately one year, you can then take the fella down the stairs.
So from the point of view of hip and joint problems, you could keep this point in mind. If the building wallahs have no objection to using the lift for the dog, then the problem is solved.

Not my first choice Vikers, I am out n out GSD fan. Had 2 at my parents place. My daughters doesn't like the look . There are other reasons too but you never know I end up getting GSD only.

I know about hip dysplasia. That is one of the biggest reason why I am looking from a home litter. I understand where you coming from but in INDIA situation is a bit different than US. Most of breeders here are puppy mills with no concern of animals health. Few good breeders are there but they ask for a pretty penny, I can not afford that at the moment.

Home litter is where dogs are part of family and taken good care of. Where I can see the Sire and Dam. I am planning to take a vet along with me to at least check whatever can be checked before taking a decision.

Hope your dogs are doign fine. I live on first floor and have access to lift. Though its been almost a decade since I had a dog but I am not a first time dog owner

Absolutely no jumping, no tug of war, no chew toys apart from may be a kong. I have taken this decision only because I got access to the land otherwise I am dead against having dogs in the apartments. Apart from that I am going to alter my work timings also so that he does not have to stay alone when we are not there.

Lets hope I find one ....

Would like to bring to your notice the indigenous breeds. We have a breed for every specific utility less the maintenance and adaptability issues with the foreign breeds. No stink, no drool,temperature issues,less hair fall ,ect. Many other advantages to add. Caravan,mudhol,pashmi are best suited for apartments in all aspects especially their size.We also have Rajapalayam ,kombai suiting your needs. Bully Kutta is not everyone's game but i have friends maintaining them in apartments .I am native to the maharashtra karnataka border where caravan, mudhol and pashmi have developed. most info on the net INCLUDING WIKIPEDIA is hoax. I am promoting the Caravan hound so I can provide you the information if you wish. DO give the indigenous a good chance. Else you could also do some good by adopting a pup, all known breeds come up frequently with the animal activists. I can provide you some contacts as well.

This is a joke, right? Putting aside what indigenous Indian breeds may have to offer, there are only nine "American" breeds and 169 that did not originate here. American-developed breeds have no advantages based on their country of origin. I think it likely that, while Indian-originated breeds no doubt have good qualities, their country of origin is not the reason. I feel pretty certain that the Kennel club of India's members don't think of their dogs as "foreign". My current breed (German Wirehaired Pointer) was recognized by the AKC in 1959 and my previous breed (Gordon Setter) in 1884, but we're all Americans now. Just as Indian dogs are all Indian now.

Well I sincerely hope more so called dog lovers are like you. Not many go to the lengths you have in mind and I am quite sure any dog ( though I hate to call them that at times, when I see the qualities that they possess which leave most humans wanting) which comes to your home would consider itself fortunate.

@ steve : If you find it funny please have a good laugh. Now [if you have finished laughing] think what happens when you put a Saint Bernard or a Husky[ bred in India with a breeder who keeps them in temperature control ] in a farm where temperature rises to 46 deg Celsius ? The saint bernard dosent last a good 15 days neither will the husky. Both practical experiences. A Bully kutta is happy in the chill of Punab and the heat of Karnataka.THIS is adaptability of the indigenous.

Now the maintenance issue ; This weekend I was carrying a 3 year male 85 kgs 33inch at withers Bully kutta [Indian mastiff] to the farm in my car . I opened the car today which is 2 days after the trip, there was hardly any foul scent.The caravan hound will hardly smell even when present in the car. When I carried a friend's 35 kg Labrador ret. for 2 hours, the car held the foul smell even after 3 days. This odor becomes a major issue when the animal is in confines of a flat. The indigenous suffer much lesser skin and other diseases since they have lived with these for generations and have their genetics developed to take care of them .

You are confusing the unsuitabiilty of individual breeds for certain circumstances with their country of origin. For that matter, I hear Northern India gets cold weather and heavy snowfall. Is it less Indian due to the fact that heavily-coated "foreign" breeds are more suited to such climates? There are plenty of dogs that originated in warm climates from Egypt to Israel to Mexico. India is a big country with a range of climate...ilke many others. The highest temperature in Aghanistan ever recorded was 49.9 °C and the lowest was −52.2 °C . Afghan Hounds adapt, as do many US breeds to our vast range of weather. Suiting the dog to the climate (if it's going to be outdoors a lot) is sensible, as is selecting a dog based on many other factors as well. Labs have oily coats as they were bred to be cold water duck dogs (though Chesapeake Bay Retrievers have more and are better cold water dogs) and consequently can put out a "doggie" odour. Many breeds have very little oil in their coats and don't.
