Hopefully this question has not been asked previously (I'm unable to run a search with 'gd' on the forum since it expects a minimum of 3 letters).

I'm looking for my first air rifle (second air gun, first was a INR 2000 air pistol bought in Bangalore 5 year back). The budget (in principle) is INR 5000. I would prefer ordering online or making a day trip to Kolkata - since there are no stores in the vicinity.

After looking around on the Aimco website, I was able to shortlist these two rifles (both by GD sports)

Has anyone got any experience in these models? In particular, I'm interested in knowing about guns with good fps and accuracy. I would be using the gun for plinking and pest (monkey) control, and maybe, hopefully, to compete. Note: the idea is not at all to kill the monkeys but give them a decent sized lump so they think before destroying the gardens.

Does anyone have any better recommendations (rifle or pistol) I should check out - like already mentioned, I can order online or travel to Kolkata.

UPDATE BASED ON POPULAR DEMAND:

I have decided to not turn the gun on the monkeys and rather use an Indian plastic pellet gun together with dogs and crackers.

Forum does not advocate use of Air/fire arms against animals.
To drive out monkeys ,you should use crackers or something of that sort.
If you come to Kolkata ,then you yourself can choose from many other brands like Cannon,Daw's,SDB,Tommy and Aimco etc.
You may contact Aimco, Great Eastern Fire arms Co, who can deliver at your home as well.
I have no idea about GD products.
I used Cannon 35/65 and SDB 45 ,both are excellent guns in given price.

If you want years of hassle free shooting pleasure go for Precihole Sports Peagasus/Orion .177/.22 cal Air Rifle available at Aimco for around Rs 10000..If you can extend your budget a little bit then get yourself a Precihole sports NX 100 series Air Rifle (Polaris/Scorpius). They are undoubtedly India's best made air rifles!! If you are really tight on budget then buy a IHP 35, available at Rs 6500 at Aimco..It's a tried and tested product!!

I think I will go for the Canon gun for now and save up for a better one later. But when I called Olympic Sports he says the price of Canon (.177) is around INR 6.5K. Do you know if this is indeed the case or if I can get a better price?

Got the model 65 for Rs. 2,700 in 2010. How much is the asking now?
One thing about that brand is the accuracy. Surprisingly very good rifling, heavy though.
At 20 meters, it as accurate as my German rifle, perhaps not that much fps though.

There is no guarantee that the monkey one shoots will get a decent sized lump rather than a fatal injury. I recall that an air rifle shop salesman assured me that pellets would sting and not kill, but he was lying while trying to sell me a rifle, and was not concerned about what I did with it. Most air rifles in India produce at least 120 to 150 meters per second (or more) out of box. Skin penetration requires as little as 70 meters per second. I have a photo of my skin being torn by a ricochet 15 meters away from a target. Any air rifle can put a hole in the side of a tin can at 10 meters. That is more than enough to penetrate parts of the skull bone and put a pellet in the brain.

What you have asked here is whether you can get a rifle for monkey control that will not kill. It is not possible to make any such recommendation. Just forget about it.

May I also point out that monkeys are not destroying gardens from their viewpoint. They are foraging for food. It may be your garden that is being destroyed. You really should be looking at other methods to scare away monkeys - because shooting them is illegal and if caught a jail sentence awaits. There is no such thing as a "safe to shoot animals or humans" air rifle.

Cheap Airsoft clone pistols available in National Market (and eBay) are probably safe to use for monkey control using 6 mm plastic balls. They will not kill. I would not recommend expensive "real" airsoft guns

Basu there are some parts of the skull that can easily be penetrated by an air rifle pellet. I will not bother listing out those parts - but maybe some other time in private. Besides - I guess you have seen my video in which coconut shells are penetrated?

I do remember when I was a kid, my grandpas house had a very big garden at the back and we had problems with Macaques (monkeys). A cousin threw a stone at the monkey which proved wrong because the monkey attacked. We later observed that it was the alpha male. Do be careful.

China's air force creates a battalion of monkeys to scare off birds

The Air Force of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) of China has trained a group of macaques to help protect an air base close to Beijing. These monkeys have been put here to take care of the huge flocks of birds that pose a threat to flights.
According to China's Air Force News website, the macaques have been taught to destroy nests in nearby trees and chase away the birds that have become a nuisance during the take-offs and landings of fighter planes in the base whose exact location was not revealed.
The base has used practically every means of tackling the problems of the birds, from firecrackers to scarecrows or even firearms but nothing proved to be as effective as the monkeys which are jokingly referred in military circles as "the Chinese army's new secret weapon".
The macaques respond with the obedience of a recruit to the whistles that their trainers use to give them orders and are capable of destroying more than 180 nests close to the base at a rate of around six nests per monkey.
It is certainly not the first army to use domestic animals in the elite forces: The Washington Post daily recalled that the US uses dolphins to detect, locate and mark mines.
However, dogs are the most used animals in armies around the world.

You can always try the "real" airsoft guns, they won't penetrate anything thick enough but gives a very acceptable sting. But you won't find them here at a cost you want & you can't source them at a cost you can. Choosing an AR for your use is a big NO NO.

My sincere advice is for you not to try any sort of air rifle / pistol to shoot at monkey's because you will not be giving them a sting but an injury which may turn fatal for them. It is not only illegal to shoot monkey's under the wild life act but also cruel. My request is that you use crackers ( as suggested by others) or some other noise making device to keep them at bay.

You're a wise man, BD. I'd thought about that as well - then it occurred to me that I won't be going after the langur monkeys alone, but with a battalion of 4 dogs Some of those dogs have a track record of being successful with monkeys.

Anyways, I decided not to use the airgun on them. Instead I'll get a local plastic pellet gun and things like:

Thanks! I'm starting to lean towards the precihole models as well.

Quick question: what can I do to prevent rusting? I live close to the beach, and monsoons are almost here. I don't want the barrel to rust (didn't bother about it with the he-man gun, which did rust a bit, but I would probably want to be a careful with the precihole).. Does the anti-rust oil work well?
