Back to the open sight

Post by u_vaste » Tue Jul 30, 2013 10:08 am

HI guys,

its been raining lot in Mumbai and I get practice to on weekends only. It happened this way rain has taken some break and i decided to practice on terrace. got lost in shooting trance and missed the gathering clouds, rain started pouring and in hurry, I got confused to save mobile or gun or other things, so I gather hole stuff and tried to take cover, in process my IHP35 fell down. it ripped my scope(BSA essential) with the rail almost bending from half( I don't have pic now )though nothing happened to my scope.I have straighten the rail and re fixed it but after using it for while it bent again and developed play so my scope started wobble finally I removed the scope.

I guess ,I need new scope rail now Target tune India is not shipping any till 15th august till then I am using IHPs open site. My IHP has problem originally , it used to shoots right side of target since beginning. now I have taken my rear site extremely to the left. I have tried to bend front site pin towards left as well but it does not help much. also I have observed I have taken rear sight to extreme high and pellets still shooting slightly low. I think power has some what lowered but its was consistent so far till I have used some light pellets of mastershot export quality (lots of them more than 500 got 1000 of them ) once there was bang literally like fire cracker( i do not know what cased it) now there is some inconsistency.

see pic using scope at 10 meters using G-smith pellets in sitting position. left target 5th shot went down and on right three shots went down two on target.

Any suggetion guys.

That's pretty good shooting. The up and down maybe due to fatigue (this is a wild guess as no one can give you an answer without observing you shooting) so the only advise would be to practice more. Do some holding drills. ;-)

Thats pretty good shooting !!
If you think that fatigue is not the factor as mentioned by Dev and there is no sudden lose of power ,you may file off the height of front sight post by 1-2 mm.
Hope this will solve the issue.

This is indeed a desperate situation. I wish it were possible to get standard replacement rear sights so one can play. One possibility is that you should be able to correct the high shooting as well as shooting to right problem by filing off the entire upper surface of the rear sight by about 1.5 mm and cutting a new notch in a better position

I played such games with my old SDB and had some success, but I now realize that ultimately that rifle simply loves Mastershot Wadcutters and will be true and accurate any time with them. Also with 11 grain Marshal shot flat head. With other pellets it is temperamental and tends to group in areas where the sights cannot be adjusted, just like your IHP.

Have you tried other pellets? Difficult to believe but my SDB shoots some light pellets low and heavy GSmith Flat head so high that I cannot adjust the sights no matter what.

When testing the gun and not the shooter it really needs to be shot from a bench, and preferably by 2 different people.
Otherwise the shooter become too much a part of the equation.

Gentlemen thanks for reply.
I forgot to mention I have already shot around or more than 5000 pellets with this gun so far and tested initially almost all pellets available in .22 but I have used scope almost all the time. I get good accuracy with wadcutter , diana 5.6mm, Rsw superdome 15grain and g-smith. G-smith observed to be most accurate, though I use it with pellet seater , else it will stuck in barrel . I use shoot 10m mostly (only available option for me due to space). I found master shot worst it makes thurrr sound mostly and give wide spread may be because it is lightest.

see 30mtr testing(actual distance tested with lase range finder) off hand with scope it was before problem and since this building was due to demolish It was safe to shoot. now I can not dare to try. top two shots and other to edge are mastershot and four below are wadcutter

@ mark noted try to use bench whenever I get chance and test.
@bennedose i try to something with sights now , i will post once get some results.

ok, now I found that my shooting with open site is not good as with scope (will try to shoot this week end and post results). the problem is, I am using this target with 9th ring is 5.5mm and from 10meter you can see black bulls eye from 4th ring and not 9th ring as can be seen from scope.it would have been easier to sight, if it would have been white color or contrast color. now if aim at this bulls eye sometimes its difficult to judge black front sight pin on black background of bulls eye (I mostly get time in afternoon or evening low light condition) I will see if I can get any fiber optical sight or modify existing. Now This target is ISSF spec. so I do not want to change it and I have already printed 500 of them.presently I am shooting by taking judgement at center of bulls eye circle. I do not know how people does in competition or in club since I have read that no optical magnification allowed. I have read peep sights are best and you can actually sight or aim center of bulls eye easily, My question is do you really see ninth ring or shoot with judgment only. please don't redirect to post links, I have read and searched quiet many just seeking you personal experiences.

The advice I have got at the rifle association is to aim exactly at the 6 O'clock point of the target circle and not at the centre.

Dear u_vaste, In case you are in Mumbai, you can get a replacement rear sight (open) at M Saleh for under Rs. 200. Good luck.

Oh OK I stand corrected then. Purchased mine a few months back. He had a few in stock then. He advised me that mine may not fit the Chini AR as is. I have ripped off the old one and yet to fit in the one purchased. I suppose for the IHP, one can also contact IHP @Vatwa.
