Any suggestions for a First gun?

Post by dhruv67 » Tue Jun 04, 2013 3:41 pm

Hi folks,

Wanted to mine the knowledge of all the gurus present in this forum.

Once I get my CRTC certificate, I plan to apply for a gun license right away! The dilemma I find myself facing is "which gun should I be buying"; hence, this thread.

Here is what I think:
1. It would be easier to apply for a .22 license since I am a temporary member of KSRA. I can tell the licensing authority that I need a gun for target practice.
2. A 12 bore - Its my dream to own a O/U, but I think it will be easier to get a .22 license..am I correct?
3. A pistol - I am not seriously thinking about this option as getting a license would be next to impossible! I am saying this because I don't think that revolvers/pistols are meant for target sports. I am not sure if KSRA allows it- Pls correct me if I am wrong.

Neither do I have a budget in mind..nor am I aware of prevailing gun prices. I think I will be able to get a decent .22/12 bore 100,000- hope my assumption is correct.

I would be grateful if the members can advise me on which type and make of gun to buy.

Apologies if some of these questions have already been answered- they didn't come up when i used the search option.

Regards,
Dhruv

Section 13(3) arms act 1959 says
(3) The licensing authority shall grant--
(a) a licence under section 3 where the licence is required- -
(i) by a citizen of India in respect of a smooth bore gun having a barrel of not less than twenty inches in length to be used for protection or sport or in respect of a muzzle loading gun to be used for bona fide crop protection: Provided that where having regard to the circumstances of any case, the licensing authority is satisfied that a muzzle loading gun will not be sufficient for crop protection, the licensing authority may grant a licence in respect of any other smooth bore gun as aforesaid for such protection, or
(ii) in respect of a point 22 bore rifle or an air rifle to be used for target practice by a member of a rifle
1. Subs. by Act 25 of 1983, s. 6, for sub- section (2) (w. e. f. 22- 6- 1983 ).
club or rifle association licensed or recognised by the Central Government;

You can get a .22 rifle for target practice if you are a rifle club member. You can also get 12bore shotgun if you are not disqualified by section 14 of arms act.
A .22 is my suggestion as ammo is cheap in indian scenario.

What made you think like this???.

.22lr pistols are used in 25mtr and 50mtr competitions as per ISSF rules. So you can also opt a .22 or .32 pistol for target practice.

I am saying this because I don't think that revolvers/pistols are meant for target sports.
Really? Why do you think this?

As Renjith747 wrote, according to the Arms Act, you are eligible to get three licenses/license for three firearms + one .22 rifle if you are a rifle club member. They are not doing you any favour when you apply for your license. Apply for what you want by providing all the requisite information. If they deny, go the RTI route and appeal. You are bound to succeed. They can delay it but cannot deny it, provided you stand your ground. You need not be afraid of the process. There are a good few examples on this very board where members appealed against the decisions of the licensing authorities and won.

Let me clarify what I meant by "I am saying this because I don't think that revolvers/pistols are meant for target sports", what i intended to put across was "It will be difficult to explain to the authorities that I want to buy IOF pistols/revolvers like Ashani. etc. for target practice" - that's my perception- pls correct me if I am wrong.

Yes, i am inclined towards a .22 rifle as well. Not very interested in an IOF one- KSRA has Brunos and they are a delight to fire.

@ dr.jayakumar- thanks, i shall check out the Bangalore Armoury.

A .22 rifle is one of the most practical, usable, versatible firearm one could own- definitnely so in the Indian scenario. If you are new to gun ownership it will also help you learn the nuances of owning and maintaing a firearm. Keep in mind that firing at a range is only part of the experience- purchasing the firearm itself, the price and availablilty of ammo, cleaning equipment, maintainance, repair etc should all be taken into account.

As you progress through your shooting years you could very well switch to different firearms based on your interest.

Just my 2 cents.
