BRK Grasso Bolo - I.

Arrived a short while ago.

Will post my pics after I have taken them but here are three, courtesy Bark River Knives.

First impressions:

1. Will serve the purpose I bought it for, viz. a medium weight and not too big a brush clearing tool.

2. I still feel the handle needs a little more palm swell and more flare at the butt.

3. Whilst small (for a chopper) it should still pack a punch.

4. It is far more nimble in the hand than the GB-II I had earlier. http://indiansforguns.com/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=19151

5. The transition of the edge to the point could have been smoother.

6. The edge has been ground a bit thin. Great for slicing paper and impressing people but it may roll when it contacts wood.

7. Overall, I like it but it remains to be seen how it performs, provided I ever make it outdoors this year... :roll:

I stand corrected. Chopped into a 1/2" thick treated cedar panelling plank four times and the edge has neither rolled nor chipped and it bit deep.

Thats an awesome looking knife! Clean, sharp lines. Does it feel similar to a kukri in terms of handling? I may be wrong here but from what little I know of BRKT, dont they usually smoothen and round off their micarta? How does that squared off micarta feel?

Now that I think about it, I guess smooth, round micarta might not be ideal for a chopper. This would offer much more grip.

Not quite. A Khukuri is far more front heavy and the handle has a circular or oval cross-section.
I may be wrong here but from what little I know of BRKT, dont they usually smoothen and round off their micarta? How does that squared off micarta feel?
BRK provide a polished and a matte finish on their handles. Whether the handle is rounded, squared, chamfered, etc. depends on the particular knife. This one has a matte finish but as far as BRK finishes go, matte does not translate to rough.

On the contrary. When using a snap cut with a chopper, the handle will move in the hand (don't let the blade torque when it contacts wood or you could roll or chip the edge) and a grippier or rougher handle will result in blisters.

Apart from the rings that stand proud at the middle, a Khukuri has a smooth, round/oval handle. Where it trumps the BRK Bolos, is by having a very pronounced flare at the butt.
