I want to correct you here brother... the effective range of shotgun is 100 yards and pellets travel more than 500 yards.

....we are in 2007 and lG, SG, etc and other multiple projectile cartridges were banned in 1984......please discussing about those ctgs which are currently banned and illegal to possess is not such a good idea.

Hi art_collector,
even though 000 , 00 or No 1 ( LG, SG, SSG)are banned in india but they are legal here( in USA) .. I do not have much experience with shot guns or long guns. So i think its knowledgeable to hear this and might try when i go to shooting range next time. With summer coming, outdoor ranges will be open to check how effective shotguns are with different shot shells at different ranges. In indoor shooting ranges that i usually go, the max you can fire is 25-30 yards ..
Cheers
Mandeep

Why use ammo which has a dispersion area.
Use a slug,Shaktiman makes them, they are legit and available of the shelf.

AC,
I believe the reference to LG seems to be anecdotal from his (DSingh's) Dad's experience. At which time these cartridges would have been perfectly legal. They were banned only in the mid/ late 1980's or so... the 1987 reference was only to No. 5 birdshot...
DSingh, please jump in and correct me if I am mistaken...
Sanjay is right, for increased effective range against large targets, it's best to go with a rifled slug - one would need to be a good shot and familiar with using this ammo in that particular gun to hit the target though...
Multiple projectile ammo is meant for closer range moving targets - flying/ running etc.
Cheers!

P.S. - May I add here that shooting game at the wee end of effective range is not humane as you will most of the time only "wing" the bird and cause it to suffer. A clean kill would not be possible most of the time. This is not a sporting practice!

Now gentlemen, please understand that irrespective of chokes and barrel lengths, shooting a regular 12 bore 2 3/4" cartridges loaded with slugs and buckshot at 100-150 yards effectively is purely anecdotal.Slugs, when fired in a smooth bore, barely accurate beyond 30-40 yards. Buckshot probably 50-60 if stretched.Beyond that they spread too much and/or drop. On targets its impractical and in hunting situations it's inhuman. I don't think a single barrel has any more range than a DB.
Best-
Vikram

DSingh,
There is something called PUNCTUATION marks.Your posts are difficult to read and I am sure many would just skip them.Moderators don't have that luxury.Unless you start doing something about this, other members would find it tedious trying to decipher what you wish to convey. It would be a pity if your contribution is not appreciated by other members who don't have either the time or the patience to go through them.

What one should do with the LG,SG or SSG cartridges which he got from his father or grandfather ? Should he through it in the ditch or put them in the fire ? If any one have these cartridges then this means that it came in india before the ban on these cartridges, cause nowdays no one can buy these cartridges as they are not available in the indian market.

Danish,
IIRC after the ban came into effect all license holders who had such cartridges had approx. 1 year to deposit them or fire them etc. As of today if you have cartridges in SG, SSG, LG etc. you are in contravention of the law and can/ will be prosecuted if the authorities get wind of it...
Cheers!

ALL READERS WILL BE SURPRISED TO KNOW THAT PROHIBITED ARMS LIKE .38 , 45 OR PISTOLS WHICH ARE NOT AUTOMATIC ARE NOT CONSISDERED PROHIBITED BY COURTS IN CRIMINAL CASES.
Now thats surprising-pistols which are not automatic-bit of an archaic term-revolving pistol was at one time , used for a revolver.
So , technically a 45 AR is not PB? is this correct?
Abhijeet-Surprising!
"As of today if you have cartridges in SG, SSG, LG etc. you are in contravention of the law and can/ will be prosecuted if the authorities get wind of it..."
no statute about having OLD ammo?
Never thought it would extend to this!

He may be right on this. The word Prohibited is applicable only to firearms and ammunition included in category 1(a). .38,.45,303 etc etc come in category 1(b) and 1(c).I once read an old letter of the Ministry of Home detailing as to how a firearm is to be categorised. The letter does not refer to these firearms as PB firearms, but refers to them by these categories alone.
Infact what constitutes a Prhibited firearm is of great importance for courts as the quantum of punisment varies depending upon the category of firearm used in the offence.Extending upto death if a prohibited firearm is used.Do remember a case in which the court had held that .303 is NPB.
