Again, Please DON'T REPLY TO Spam in the forum

Posts that don't fit into any other category. If it's anything to do with guns, it probably doesn't belong here!

It works like this: people have set up software programs that register and log in to websites like this one. Once a login has been established, the people who control web based computers can "push" posts to all the sites they have logins on.

A vendor then buys so many postings for their product from these people who have set up all of these logins. The vendors pay a very small amount for each post, but because the people who have the logins have many thousands of them controlled by computers, they can make some money this way. The vendors can get a lot of advertising out for very little money.

But the people who set up these computer controlled logins (the computers that control these networks are known as "bots" which is short for "robots") are very clever and smart. They set up their bots to watch the postings their bots make: if someone responds to one of their posts, they know that the site is not a 'dry hole" i.e., they can get responses by posting, so then the program in their bots floods the site with advertising spam.

You must realize that there is no person listening or watching for responses to the posts their bots make. Responding to these bot posts is. like going down to the corner and talking to a post box. You might as well talk to a stone, because there is no human being monitoring. The person who has set up the bot is far to busy to eve look at any post. Hey are busy writing more programs for their bot computers to spread more spam across the Internet.

That said, I am understanding that spamming has picked up considerably across the Internet. Perhaps this is because we have entered a major shopping and buying season

Whatever, it is VITAL that nobody should respond to spam posts. Your moderator team has been absolutely swamped, clearing out all of those trash posts so that you all can enjoy the site without wading through a bunch of sewage.

Dear Timmy,
thanks for enlightening me. Everyday is a learning learning new things for me.

Regards.

Gentlemen:

Please don't reply to spam! If the poster is writing in some unknown language, they are probably advertising Nigerian bank fraud schemes or erectile dysfunction pills or fake wristwatches. If the post is questionable, please just mark it as exported and it will be taken care of.

Thank you!

How hard would it be to add a simple logic based verification before a user can post or reply to a topic? It could be as simple as asking random math questions like 2+2 = ? or 3+4 = ?

Alternatively, this could only be used for the first 50 posts made by a user.

It's not hard at all, but it's very, very annoying.
But putting a minimum posts count before disabling it seems like a viable solution.

Then again, if this is a once-in-a-year occurrence, it might not be worth it :)
