Learning Knife making in Rajasthan

Post by nickUK » Sat Oct 27, 2012 5:57 pm

Hi all.

I will be traveling around Rajasthan from Jan 25 -February 15. Since I've recently become interested in knife making I was wondering if there is anyone there I could watch/learn from. I guess there must be a few knife makers on the forum, or maybe I could find a 'professional' knife maker somewhere.

Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks

You would find roadside blacksmiths all over the state (in fact all across north India), called gadariaa lohaars - literally meaning cart blacksmiths, a reference to their nomadic lifestyle. They usually produce fairly basic tools & blades for agricultural use, but will take custom orders for pretty much anything. Quality of their work is somewhat crude.

There are also some traditional knife makers in/ around Jodhpur & Udaipur who make more elaborate pieces for the tourist trade, don't have any details though - maybe more knowledgeable members can pipe in with more info.

Cheers!

Well, after doing some more research about knife makers in Taiwan i actually found an ABS master knife maker living 20minutes away from me! Such good luck. Im nearly finished with my first knife made from an old file..But what i want to see are some inlay techniques for handkes and sheaths. So I guess it doesnt matter if i seen this done on tourist knife or high priced knives. I guess i just need to keep my eyes open when i get there. Thanks fort the help!
