Vikram, I don't know how I missed this one the first time around, but thanks, I've got this juicy nugget now!

What does `Bump` mean in the circumstance in which you`ve here Vickers ?
Interesting book - a firearms classic .... and one that I`ve recommended myself a few times.
Greeners other books must also be in the public domain.

Just pushing it to the top ten posts so that more people get to see that the post exists and can benefit from reading it. I shall trawl for the other books by Greener and post them her should I find any.

As long as you appreciate it for its historical value, and not for current reference.

I found the PDF interesting, but I prefer paper when possible. It turned out that the book had been reprinted many times, then many more after it went out of copyright. I found a used reprint in good shape at a very low price, and I've read it cover to cover several times.

The copy I have is a reprint of the edition of 1907, which was an update to the original 1870? edition. The original book was written by one Geener, the updated edition was done by his son. Every now and then the text refers to "modern" and you're left to figure whether it meant 19th or 20th century "modern," but that's not really a problem.

Greener mentioned the prices of some of their rifles. I went to one of those "buying power across time" web sites, plugged in the numbers, and those nice old double rifles were relatively even more expensive then they they are today. I didn't realize that they had always been rich man's tools.
