Ammunition is hard to find and I believe expensive (anything north of INR 350/- per pop). The gun itself should be cheap, anywhere between 80,000/- to 1,50,000/-. Of course some may ask for ridiculously more, but then there is no accounting for that... Depending on your jurisdiction, be prepared to educate (read fight red tape) the licensing authority about .38 Spl being NPB. Most of them will be obtuse and refuse to enter it as such, part of the reason why they go cheap (the other being availability of ammo or more accurately the lack thereof).

.380 ACP ammo is not available with any dealers these days, it seems to have simply vanished from the market!

Cheers!

as far as the general rules go, purchase weapon of the calibre that are made by IOF....otherwise if you are frequent visitor to US then you can bring ammunition along with you, each time you come back........

the market rate depends on state to state.....also........38 should cost you anything between 1-1.5 lakh and cost of amn could be 500 pop....and with each passing year it rate would go up.........

Heck I've been searching for a good weapon in this caliber since months but without success, let alone even close to that mentioned price range. Sometimes I wonder where have all the 38 special weapons disappeared!!!??? :?:

Before one has the chance to educate authorities (our local one btw seems to know this fact) one has to hassle with these dealers all of whom believe "38 is a prohibited bore". Try convincing them that bores are not prohibited but certain cartridges are and certain not.

A dealer friend of mine told me the cause for the shortage of .38 specials.According to him many unscruplous dealers have had the printing changed on the revolvers from .38 specials to .357 magnums and sold them at hefty margins.Basically .38 ammo can be fired in a .357,while firing a .357 round in .38 can have disastrous consequences, but in India who cares as long as the money is coming in.The other day 500 rounds of .357 were seized from the samjhauta express hidden in cement bags and being smuggled from Pakistan.

I agree with what waulakh says. Have heard similar stories and from initially disbelief I have not started to believe them.

Consider this as a case of the missing 38s.

There is Immense shortage of 357s but they are selling like hot cakes (perhaps there should be a better simili).

You are a dealer and you dont find them easy anymore. So you induce an artificial scarcity of 38 ammunition and sooner or later owners come and sell their guns dirt cheap. You buy them, restamp them and perhaps do a little job on the cylinder or perhaps add new one and sell as 357 magnum.

The dealer also told me that in India there is limit of 25/50 cartridges per year so the owner will probably have had the gun many years before any unfortunate incident takes place.

This is also made easy as there are many 38s which have corresponding magnums. So S&W Mod 10 is 38 but 13 is 357 or Ruger Security Six which even has same size cylinder and frame but is only heat treated differently.

He can not as he does not have an Indian license.Import through baggage is allowed only to an arms licensee.BTW,after 9/11 export of ammo out of USA requires an export license. This is regardless of the quantity of ammo sought to be exported.Fee is something like $275.
