Intro to the Indian gun culture.
Hello fellow GUN enthusiasts, hobbyists, amateurs and professionals. It's a pleasure to join this wonderful community. I thought there were'nt many like us and I had almost given up on this passion before I stumbled upon this budding community working on sharing all the necessary information required to keep our gun culture and history alive.
I am a 25 year old small business owner. I've shot at the 10m air rifle state championship in uttranchal in 2004. With two other shooters we came second in the entire state. Apart from that I've shot plenty of .22 calibre and 12, 20 gauges and even assault weapons when I was pursuing higher studies in the states. I loved every minute of it, thinking I'd continue this hobby, enthusiasm when I come back to India. Here I am, still trying to figure procedures for obtaining a license to begin moving out of the air rifle space. I'll be getting my license soon.
I want a brand new o/u browning 625 field 20 gauge or the beretta pigeon V. Money is not the issue but I just learnt that you can't import guns into India since our really awesome government banned import of firearms in 1986. BS.
What do I have to do to get hold of a new and I mean brand new imported firearm. I mean are there loopholes on our import laws.
Help would be appreciated.

Re: Intro to the Indian gun culture.
As per Indian law, unless you are a 'National Level' recognized champion shooter, you can't import skeet shooting weapons or 'match spec' rifles.
The only other route would have been to have brought the weapons in as part of 'Transfer of Residence' ...after doing the necessary paperwork here. But now it's too late.
I recommend you reconcile yourself to using second-hand weapons available in India. Some will be in absolutely new condition. If you are willing to pay the price, please get in touch with some lead gun dealers in your nearest Metro city.

Firstly, welcome to IFG.
Your enthusiasm is appreciable and your frustration with existing laws is understandable. However, if you want to know about loopholes in law and gaming them, I am sorry you are on a wrong note there. I know that my words sound harsh and preachy. But, IFG is about sharing information, encourage legal and responsible ownership of firearms and try to change the existing laws.
Best-
Vikram

Money is not the issue
If money is really not an issue then ignorance seems to be certainly an issue. No offense intended. If money is truly not an issue then why not hire a lawyer to fight this unconsitutional import law? The matter has been discussed in detail at number of places on this website. One of the discussions can be read here http://indiansforguns.com/viewtopic.php ... 15#p174834I mean are there loopholes on our import laws.

welcome aboard.
Why a 625? I know the 725 looks crap but why not a 525? thats a good gun. 425 even better.
If money isnt an issue then i could get you a beretta for 15-20 lacs.
pm me if interested.

Well let me point out something here, in order to bring a firearm on TOI from the US you need to get an export permit from the department of defense. That is not difficult since its a one time export but the real problem is, you will not get the export permit unless you have an import permit from your home country.absinroy wrote:As per Indian law, unless you are a 'National Level' recognized champion shooter, you can't import skeet shooting weapons or 'match spec' rifles.

So according to me even getting your own weapon on a TOI from US is difficult if you are an Indian citizen.
I don't mean to hijack the thread topic but more details can be found by threads posted by Anand here on IFG.
Now I don't know if you can acquire a one time import license in India to get a firearm from overseas on TOI, and I am researching more on that but if anybody had some info on that then please feel free to chime in.
Thanks and frustrated as always

Please read this post about how ToR process works http://indiansforguns.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=16315Bhargav wrote:Well let me point out something here, in order to bring a firearm on TOI from the US you need to get an export permit from the department of defense. Export/Import permits are necessary only if the firearm is not being carried as part of baggage

Re: Intro to the Indian gun culture.
Did some further reading on this as Bhargav had mentioned this a couple of times and I did not want to dismiss it with just a "look at this thread" reply. I am trying to find a document which specifically talks about requiring an export permit for individuals (especially for immigrant/non-immigrant aliens). But I did find information on general firearm exports and the clause about requiring an import permit from the destination country.a__v wrote:Please read this post about how ToR process works http://indiansforguns.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=16315Bhargav wrote:Well let me point out something here, in order to bring a firearm on TOI from the US you need to get an export permit from the department of defense. Export/Import permits are necessary only if the firearm is not being carried as part of baggage
As per my understanding, for an individual coming on ToR, as there is a provision to bring a firearm, it should be possible to do an RTI with the nearest Indian Consulate or with Indian Customs, to confirm that an import permit is not required for the firearm while returning on ToR. If there is a need to file for an export permit, then the RTI response should work as a valid legal document.
Please correct me if my understanding is incorrect and if anyone has more insight on this, please share the same.
