Waah, Waah.........Waah,

Kya baat hai.....Khub kahi.....

Seriously, I guess, we'll need smelling salts by our sides when we hear the prices of guns these days....air guns included....

Roughly translated.

Wo Zamana tha jab Khalil Khan faqthe udaya karte they
Those were the days when Khalil Khan used to let doves fly.

Aur ye zamana hai jab kimat sun ke hamare faqhte udd jaate hai.
And in these times our hearts fly off like doves due to the inflationary price regime.

I guess obsolete bores are the only ones sold cheap for lack of ammo.

Even obsolete and obsolescent bores are being priced at Rs.1,00,000 to Rs. 2,00,000 by dealers. I would be interested in buying a cheap rifle even of obsolete bore if anyone can tell me of any that are for sale.

LOL Tenx, wouldn't that be nice.
Just remember that if you show up at Mohammedally Noorbhoi's place with today's Rupees having post independance politician's likenesses on them, old man Noorbhoi would probably call the cops on you for trying to pass off "funny money".

Nice rifle Herb!

Manton's in Calcutta used to be the place.

The venerable Jim Corbett used to buy there. His favourite rifle a .275 Rigby seduced him a 100 years ago from a Manton's display

Excellent post and a it's beauty you got there!!!

According to this website's calculation, Rs:350 in 1947 would cost Rs:19759.30. The average inflation for thegiven period is 6.58%.

http://www.yetanothersite.com/inflation ... m#resultsA
Initial Amount Rs.350
Start Year: 1947
End Year: 2012
Expected Yearly
Inflation
(from 2009 onwards) : 5 %

Final Amount: Rs. 19759.30
Percentage Change: 5545.51%
Average Yearly Inflation 6.58% (1948 - 2012)
What cost Rs. 350.00 in 1947 would cost Rs. 19759.30 in 2012 which is an increase of 5545.51%.
The average yearly inflation for 1948 - 2012 is 6.58%.
Using the same rates, could any of our maths geniuses please come up with the figure of what Rs:350 in 1920 could cost now? Numbers, my nemesis.

I don't think the rifle which seduced Corbett a 100 yrs ago was
a .275 Rigby. It was a Westley Richards in the same calibre having a different catagory of trigger arrangement which failed him to take a shot at the '' Temple Tiger''. The .275 Rigby was presented to him after he shot the Champawat Man -Eater. A little bit OT..

Elementary watson, INR devaluation and IOF- policy makers' nexus leading to our LACHAAR status.

Agree on the correction. It was a Westley Richards chambered in .275 Rigby. The .275 Rigby being sporting adaptation of 7mm Mauser military round. I omitted the 'chambered' part in my initial post

mundaire wrote:If any of you want to know what would be today's equivalent of INR 350/- in 1923, there is a rough method you can use. Go to http://www.westegg.com/inflation/ which allows you to calculate any given amount of money adjusted for inflation, according to the Consumer Price Index, from 1800 to 2007 - this is of course in US$.

As per this calculator something that cost US$ 1 in 1923 would cost you US$ 12.06 in 2007. So now we can use the multiple 12.06 to convert INR 350 into today's prices which gives us INR 4,221 or US$ 98.16 (assuming an exchange rate of INR 43 to the US$).

Needless to say this is hardly an accurate measure of inflation (in India), but since I could not locate a similar calculator based on the historical consumer price index in India - I used this as a rough indicator.

Cheers!
Abhijeet

I uses much more simple and near accurate price comparison between ages.....

Take a price for gold ( say during 1900)

Calculate how much gold you can buy for that Money ( for 300 Rs, back then )

Calculate value to buy same qty. of gold in present date....

results will get you almost near figure....

I don't have data of previous years (1990) price of gold....
But If one had that data, can easily calculate inflation or could get much more accurate figures

hope this helps..

I remember seeing an advertisement from the 1920s for a Mannlicher Schoenauer rifle for the princely sum of Rs. 250. Good old days!

Someone from [Edited:Please refrain from using this type of expressions.Thank you-Moderator] comes to rescue.

Pritam - Here is your data regarding prices for 10 grams of Gold.

1925 - 18.75 Rs.
1930 - 18.05 Rs.
1935 - 30.81 Rs.
1940 - 36.04 Rs.
1945 - 62.00 Rs.
1950 - 99.18 Rs.
1955 - 79.18 Rs.
1960 - 111.87 Rs.
1965 - 71.75 Rs.
1970 - 184.50 Rs.
1975 - 540.00 Rs.
1980 - 1330.00 Rs.
1985 - 2130.00 Rs.
1990 - 3200.00 Rs.
1995 - 4680.00 Rs.
2000 - 4400.00 Rs.
2005 - 7000.00 Rs.
2010 - 18500.00 Rs.

For some years there are fluctuations that buck the trend.

Can you do the calculations for us now?

Also is Gold price the ideal measure for general inflation specially since gold prices and guns do not have much relation? Perhaps steel prices would be more appropriate?

Please opine.

Hi,

I found the advertisements very interesting. Does anyone have any idea why the .404 rifle was sold at Rs. 300 under the Mauser name and for Rs. 350 and Rs. 625 under the Manton's and Vickers' names respectively? Were the stocks, sights or barrels of superior quality?

Regards.

Were these prices for brand new revolvers or for used ones in good condition?
