Improt Of .22 Air Rifle

Post by Lawman » Sun Jul 29, 2012 11:55 pm

Hi, Gurus please guide me to import a .22 cal. Air Rifle by air through personal baggage route. I know that .177 cal. Air Rifle can be imported without much hassle by air through personal baggage route or by courier/post but the importer should be a Rifle Club Member and copy of notification of Customs is needed.

Is there any notification of Government of India that a passenger can carry a .22 cal. Air Rifle to India ? What is the customs duty ? and what papers/documents I should carry alongwith the air rifle when returning from abroad ?

Though you will find that some members have somehow brought in .22 air rifles when returning from abroad, as per my understanding import of airguns of all calibers is restricted for import except only those allowed.

I have not come across any notification of Government of India that a passenger can carry a .22 air rifle to India. Only .177 is allowed for rifle club members only. Thus question about duty, papers and documents for .22 air rifle appears immaterial.

But if this matter is taken up skillfully in High Court, it can be successfully contested. If you are interested to fight it in High Court, then I will sit and try to gather maximum possible legal points in your support.

Thanks Ganesh_TT and Goodboy_Mentor for your replies.

I think I should prefer a RTI application before Customs Department in this regard before going to Ld. Court.

Yes RTI with the Customs will clarify the position officially before going to court. Please do share the RTI reply of Customs on this thread and your further course of action.
