Hand Made Knives (Pic Heavy)

Post by Rajat » Tue Jun 26, 2012 2:14 pm

Recently we have been discussing handmade knives etc. These discussions made me look for and find the handmade knives that I own which I had stashed away for so many years.

I had got a couple made to my specifications and was involved in making a couple others. This was done many years ago.

This does not imply that I made these myself, I did not.

Found these safe but with some rust which can be cleaned off.

These are handmade, one of a kind knives (most of them) and not a result of mass factory production(except maybe the last two). None of these are antiques and I am the first person who bought these after these were made.

I had shared the pictures of a couple of these earlier.

Below are pictures of some of these knives. I hope you like them.

Man these are good. Especially the 'Trench Knife' with the knuckle duster. Very well made :)

Awesome blades Rajat :D

So the Skeletons are finally rolling out of the closet    So what else's in there my friend    Seen the BK2, Shrapnel, ZT, the Rampuri's, the old Katana, the BM folders, :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?: :?:

Lovely blades, loved the double edged dagger. Were these made as per your specs in Dehradoon or in Rajasthan. I'm just guessing Doon as the grinds on the blades (The one's with serrations- "Rambo Knives" lollzz)are just less than perfect and the Sakligars in Rajasthan turn out mind blowing stuff, as good as any gora custom bladesmith...The last two acid etched blades definately are...

What is the material of the handles in the first few blades ? Is it buffalo horn ?

I dont think these are made in India. I think Rajat got these made in another land. For some strange reason, i have this feeling that these were perhaps made in South Africa. And in case it is made in India, its awesome work.

Moin, these look like the knives favoured by european and south african mercenaries in africa in the late seventies and early eighties. Much favoured by the belgian dutch and south african crew that fought there :) so the hunch :)

@ marthandan: Thanks buddy. Really do not have the specifications for the steel. These were made years back but I know that most of it is a variety of a kind of "tool" grade steel. One of these also originates from leaf springs.

Yes, that is damascus too.Edge retention is not among the best that I have seen. At the best it may be called average. Not really good for cutting tough material.

@ slingshot: Thanks! Yes the "trench" knife is an interesting one. :) The spikes are removable and may be unscrewed and stored in the sheath. The sheath has tiny sections for the spikes.

You are close to the origins of a couple of the blades. The rest was made in India. Some mix and match stuff has also been done to the designs and the leather sheaths were made in India.

@ Moin: Seems like you missed the first ZT and the Fallkniven F1

What else is in there? Just a few more blades :D

The double edge daggers are good and not too large. The handle too offers a nice grip.

The last two blades are not faux damascus. The metal is a type of factory produced Damascus.

Of course you have handmade characteristics but actually the grind on the serrated back blades is not really less than perfect. The grinding wheel marks have been intentionally retained on the one with the brass spacers in the handles (and the sharpened clip point) as a sort of a unique finish. The finer wheels were not used on it nor was it buffed / polished. Therefore what you see is not really an imperfection.

The larger Bowie style blade which appears more Rambo like  had a nice shiny mirror finish on it when it was new but now you see dried oil and some rust on it.

The handle material is Buffalo horn, wood and in some cases a synthetic acrylic like material.
