First Purchase from knifecenter

Post by prasanjit.baul » Sat Jun 23, 2012 12:16 pm

Hello Folks,
From very few months i wanted a good looking very sturdy and "edc" able knife for myself. After making research on various types of knives, blades, handles and all such jargons of knives and having the best of suggestions from our IFG brothers i finalized to go for a Zero Tolerance 0400st. Read about the knife on various blade forums and finally convinced this is what i should go for.

Went ahead to order from Knifecenter using my friend's credit card as i didnt have at that time. I and my friend finalized on ordering a ZT 0400 st, Zippo lighter for myself, and a S&W oasis black knife and a keychain knife for my friend. We faced some problems placing the order through credit card which was discussed here http://indiansforguns.com/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=17502 . Finally my friend made a wire transfer to Knifecenter and bingo!! the order was dispatched on 12th from US.

The products came in smooth way without any hassle. The delivery was done before time as the scheduled delivery date was on 19th July the products reached my friend on 18th at 4.00pm. Fedex is reliable and the best.

here are some pictures of my knife. Sorry for the picture quality as i dont have any camera. Took it from a 5 mp. camera of my mobile and edited the brightness and contrast as it was taken under low light conditions.

The name of the model, and other specification of the knife.
http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc4 ... 150329.jpg

The s30V blade in whole. Measures 3 3/4th inches.
http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc4 ... 694912.jpg

The handle material is good enuf to give a good grip. The ergonomics also feels fair.
http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc4 ... 517728.jpg

The good quality and sturdy pocket clip. Ensures that the knife dosnt move anybit once its attached to the pocket.
http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/cc4 ... 801404.jpg

Fits well into my hand. Loved the feel too. Built like a tank feel. Fairly heavy and bigger than what i had imagined.

Dont know the name of this part. But this is the one which should be pressed down to fold the knife and close it.

My Zippo. Model name is Bull Skull Emblem Street Chrome

being an assisted opening knife its very convenient to open the knife. You wont feel the need of an Automatic knife if you have such assisted knife. Very fast and can fold it with one hand if you get the knack of doing it. Just takes a bit of practice. I oiled the joints on the first day to ensure smooth play between the joints.

I am happy on getting this knife. I am currently edcing this knife but i am not sure of whether will i do it for more days. The knife, when opened, pops eyes out nearby and thus i am a bit on the negative side on opening it in public anywhere. Only displayed it amongst group of friends or in closed conditions. I am sure the Cops will have a busy time with me once they discover this knife in the city. The knife indeed looks scary sharp and sexy although the famous mumbai police wont think so. Thus i am now thinking of buying another knife for edc with blade of not more than 3inches and which wont look more intimidating like this one. The Benchmade and Spydercos have good options under 100$. I request you brothers to please suggest me a good knife within that range.

I havent used my ZT yet on anything beside cutting an A4 size paper and a cloth for testing the sharpness. and mind me, its fantabulously sharp.. Please advise what purpose i can use this knife. I feel like just adoring the beauty day and night and never to use it. If i get another knife for edc i will shift this to ocassional appearance knife.. and make it more of a collection. Also looking out for a Sharpening tool for this beauty babe of mine which will maintain its *figure* Will probably go for a Spyderco sharpener in near future when i order another knife.

Thanks once again brothers of IFG for advising me on a good knife. I am a happy Ifgian now..

Locking liner or liner lock

Get a Swiss knife. Wenger or Victorinox. With a locking blade if needed. Available in India.

Well Rajat Sir, it is for sure a devil as well as a little monster looking knife  . Pops up eyes hairs and everything on its appearance  . I am happy to have such a knife. Would use it for general purpose nothing more than cutting fruits, cardboard boxes and such soft stuffs. Will it be ideal to chip/shave wood shavings and such a bit harder use???

Wenger i have never heard about it. Will google it and see its availability in India. I am not fond of Victorinox as i have heard lot of negative reviews about it. Not sure how true they must be, but i will still have a second look at it.

The negative reviews i have heard about victronix is that the blade quality is not that good and loses edge very soon. Somewhere even read that the tip got chipped off dur to slight hammering on a wood. Nothing above this.

By harder use i mean chipping off some part to make slots not deeper than 1 inches in a wooden stick or logs. Something like that will come over and again when i go for treks and other outdoor activities. With the current knife i have that is a cheap chinese one, i have abused it to anything. I have chopped small branches of trees for general purposes also had cut the trunks of wild banana trees to eat the inner part. Cut thick ropes and even dug it into the ground to extract some vegetable plants that come in the jungles. The digging work with ZT is out of quetion as i wont dare do this with such a beautiful knife.

prasanjit, swiss knives are pretty decent knives if you ask me and I own many and use a few of these on a regular basis. I found nothing wrong these provided you know where to stop and treat it like a knife (and not a chisel or axe).

Same with the ZT, it is a decent knife stronger than many of its counterparts. The blade is of one of the best steels used for knife making. use it for any cutting job but I would not really recommend it (or any other folder) for batoning or digging or prying etc.

Go ahead use it and use it hard but just remember to keep it clean and well maintained. This is what you bought it for, let it be your companion on all your adventures. :D

yes.. I would make sure to use the ZT on all excursions and get a Swiss army knife or a similar multitool for my EDC. The ZT is ofcourse wont be used for any type of batoning or digging. The chinese knockoffs will suffice the need of these actions..

I am looking out to buy some Rampuri knife in Mumbai. any idea where i can get that? My father used to own a Rampuri and i used to play with it in my childhood (In the absence of my Father ofcos  ) The Rampuri is still there but all rusted and in a undesired state. Would like to have some good Rampuris for the purpose of Collection only.

Prasanjit, congrats!!! Cool toy! And BTW, why don't you try restoring the Rampuri? It feels real good to de-rust and polish stuff, lemme tell ya!

Rajat, do you get Vics with locks? Can you help me with one?
Cheers!

Sorry prasanjit I hope you wont mind our discussing this here. This should also end your search for an edc knife.

My pleasure essdee! Almost all of the larger Victorinox "work" knives (111mm) have a type liner lock to lock the blade in place. You have to move the lock away with your thumb to close the blade. Works really well like any other liner locking knife. A couple of others have a kind of a "switch" / slide release blade mechanism. Whats more: you even have a couple of models with thumb holes in the blade for one hand opening.

Liner lock models: http://www.victorinox.com/in/category/C ... 1004&m=add&

The one hand opening models too may be seen among these lock blade models.

Easily availabe accross malls, online, ebay.in and base camp stores in all major cities.

Please let me know if you need any other information or assistance.

Also just ask if you need to see the pictures of my Victorinox knives both locking and non locking  :D

Got the zt0400 St few days ago with bunch of other knives. Find my self playing and carrying the cara cara 2 and the mini grip more than any other. If you looking for an edc replacement for 0400 st . Do check out the blur series knives. I find the blur s30v as sturdy but rather compact than a zt0400.
I could not invest a lot on one sharpening tool as wanted to have a wider range to practice on different sharpening methods. The lansky four rod set is a cheap alternative for spyderco sharp maker, I also got a wet stone, a diamond sharpener, a four sided stonewith honeing oil and black white green and red stropping compound. If you go for the lansky sharpener who's is under $20, try some aus8 or 8cr13mov knives, you can get them razor edge in seconds.
