Hi TwoRivers,

The broomhandle Mauser pistol came with a wooden holster which doubled as a detachable shoulder stock.

Regards.
And that's the reason it was called a pistol carbine.

M1898 Pistol Carbine:
This is the first model to come cut for a combination wooden stock / holster. The stock doubled as a case or holster and attached to a slot cut in the grip frame.

There is no legal bar on barrel length of pistols or revolvers in India as long as they are what they are supposed to be i.e. pistol and revolver and not permanently converted into anything else. The Arms Act also does not say anything on additional shoulder stock because that is essentially an accessory and not part and parcel of the actual weapon registered against a licence. The holster/stock of the Mauser broomhandle is an example. Adding the stock does not make it a full automatic weapon like the Heckler & Koch VP 70. In case of the VP 70 the stock is actually a conversion kit that resets the sear. On the other hand the Russian Stechkin is a full auto pistol by itself. its stock is not a conversion kit and only offers extra support.

Coming back to barrel length:
Years ago I had a W&S single shot pistol that had a twelve inch barrel. The cops never asked a question. Though it was just a plinker with excellent rifling I fixed fully adjustable Bo-Mar sights and used it once at a free pistol event. In fact most free pistols in the past used to have very long barrels. I believe even now there is no restriction on barrel length for this event in India at least. I am not into competitions for years. Others will know better.

Once I was about to buy an old S&W revolver that had a 26 inch barrel (much like the Colt buntlines) and an additional shoulder stock that could be simply screwed in behind the original grip. It was legally owned by a friend who later sold it to a dealer. It was in .32 long.

Even now many people in India legally own Hi Standard pistols with additional barrels of different lengths -- 4, 5 and 6.5 inch being the most common ones. Of course it is true that most people do not declare the existence of the additional barrels simply because it is not legally mandatory as long as these are not mentioned in the licence. The same goes with the additional shoulder stocks as long as they are just "additional."

I hope this helps

Cheers

Yes Vikram, I am fully aware, and quite familiar with, what the Mauser "Broomhandle" is, and that it came with a wooden holster that could be attached as a stock. And that, with the attached holster, you could impress bad guys enough at around 300 meters to have them reconsider their options.
As to what it was called, and why, in the context of legality, and this topic, would not be up to the sales department or some writer. "Pistol Carbines" were quite the rage for a while. Here the Parabellum pistol carbine sported a longer barrel, had a fixed stock, and required a special heavier load. It was a true pistol carbine.
In any case it is not the only pistol designed for military use that came with a shoulder stock, though the Mauser's is by far the most elaborate. Until the '70s you could not own the pistol with its holster stock in the US. Unfortunately the law wasn't changed until after I had disposed of the stock of mine. (For $ 12.00). The Chinese reproductions that came later, when surplus M96s came in from China, were of poor quality at fifteen times my 12 dollars.
The only place, that I know of, that had a minimum barrel length requirement for civilian pistols was the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Apparently the authorities wanted to be sure that the pistols were not readily concealable.

In any case, it's the LEGAL definition within that jurisdiction, that determines what is legal, and what is not. That was really the gist of my message. Cheers.

In India anything that can go inside pants is legal.

Sorry just kidding.
