No I do not EDC the Shrapnel or even any large folder and you are right it is a small (SMALL) Victorinox.
I am surprised that the Sharpnel has a Rat Tail Tang, but so does the legendary Kabar and the Kabar has proved it's mettle for decades.

The blade is not rat tail in the true sense. The above picture explains everything about the tang.
I know you had posted a pic of the Shrapnel few months back and teh coating had worn off. How resilinet is the coating on these to wear and tear.
It is not really bad but yes it does wear out and will wear out completely it it sees a lot of use. The purpose of the coating on the extremas is not rust prevention unlike the beckers and esee who use the 1095 steel which is not stainless. The Steel that Extrema uses is stainless. The purpose of the coating is to make the blade non reflective and to camouflage it.
Also ER use some uheard of steel for their knives, would you happen to know what the composition of this steel is, what if teh rockwell ratings and how good is the edge retenetion. I had read a thread some time back on the ER Khukri breaking on using it to chop wood in the wilderness etc....
The Rockwell hardness of this blade is 58 which is more or less what others manufacturers use on such knives. OUt of the box sharpness was not very good but edge retention is OK for a stainless steel of this category.

Yes, I had read it too but at the same time I have seen axe handles breaking off and read about broken Beckers and Esee knives and machetes etc. Only way is to test it first before going out in the wilderness. Secondly for chopping wood axes are much better.
This might have happened but much depends on how you were using these and then what are warranties for. Although the possibilities of filing a warranty claim from India are hard to think of.
Rajat, I'm in love with the Shrapnel, will have to dispose off a few blades to get one of these puppiess... So so nice.

Spyderco Perrin PPT... This is a collaboration between 3 French designers (Fred Perrin, Philippe Perotti and Sacha Thiel), and Spyderco. Material is all standard and top-notch, but what strikes is the asymmetric design. It just looks plain good! The grip is comfortable and ergonomic, while the blade shape makes it a very good cutter. It is heavy - at 150 gm - look at the hybrid liner and frame lock as well as all steel liners. Comes with a cute lanyard, which I am yet to install. Enjoy.

I did like large blades, just not for EDC purposes. And since the day I decided I won't be collecting blades any more, most of my large blades were sold/given.
Yes, the clip is a good design - however many Spyderco fans did not like it. I actually loved the knife design which is why I picked this up. In fact, take a look at Sacha Thiel's work http://www.sthiel.fr/ - some knives are fabulous. His blades have very clean lines, no muck, and seem just business.
Ontario Rat 1 folder- lieanear lock- Aus 8 Steel. One solidly built knife and has seen more use in deployment in Afghanistan than any other knife. Love this piece.
