How so? Both the rifle and cartridge are still capable of doing what they did a hundred years ago. Kill anything hit in the right spot.
TwoRivers, I was not at all implying that the rifle suffers from any considerable disadvantages, what I was trying to say is that the Enfields which were left by the Colonial Empire allowed the corrupt political authorities to do away with an easy option for a standard issue weapon to the police forces. The problem with it being the standard issue weapon particularly in the Indian context is the training and technique that have to go into the user for it's effective use in certain life-threatening situations, particularly to manage the various factors such as Recoil, Less Rate of Fire, low maneuverability etc.
I want you to understand that I have nothing to say against the Rifle itself considering it's excellent Robustness, stopping power and Accuracy in the right hands. But it is ineffective in situations where quick and rapid fire is needed(but then again any semi-auto rifle would fail in such situations). I was addressing the issue of the the Rifle being used by the Authorities as a pretext for not improving on the standard issue weapons. The situation is so pathetic that there are a few situations where the Rifle used by the police constables has failed to fire even the first round.. But, that again reflects the sorry state of weapons maintenance in the Police Department(blame the Arms Reserve!) and it no way is sufficient to deter the good name of the good ol' mighty Enfield. Request you to read between the lines in my seemingly-inappropriate statement.

LOL, Priyan,
It's a good thing she didn't have to fire. At the most she would have one shot IF she has a chambered round. It would be impossible to charge the rifle with the mag in the way it is.
She's doing the chicken wing with a pistol grip rifle and she has her mag in backwards. I wonder how she got the mag to stay in there, maybe just held in there by friction? Well, at least she has her finger off the trigger.
I also wonder how she passed her quals. Usually they have to qualify with the weapon before they are allowed to use it.

Those rednecks have arsenals in their trucks!!
But i seriously believe the government needs to start by providing better training to the forest rangers, increase the payscale and give them better equipment.
The geniuses in government dont understand that coal and iron and infotech is all that has to be looked after.
They need to put some effort and energy into these spheres else our march towards becoming another china, where the environment was plundered and pillaged so much that things are slowly spilling out of control there.
The lovely part is, no one will do anything.
You would too, If you could,

Look at the photo again, maybe you'll notice something.
I agree with Sandy, I'd have open carried a FAL if I could or a Russian SKS with Tapco stock and 30 rd. mag just to piss the fudds off

Sorry for bringing up this old topic but I just registered, and was interested in this picture and also have my own to share. The gun in the picture is a .315 rifle which falls under the sporting category. State Forest Departments in India usually use bore, .315, .303, musket and revolvers. There are some forces (under the Central Home Ministry), not under the state forest department, designated for forest protection and they carry automatic rifles...(but I'm not too certain...just heard from some forest officials I know.)
But I was given this picture of forest guards and foresters undergoing full arms training...from pistols to LMG and everything that falls in between, including mortars and grenades! Foot/cane/arms drill to law classes and field tactics at the state police training centre.

I've met this fella IRL and he too doesn't have any idea what it was. I never saw any forest guard carrying this type of guns before.
