Hmmm! Looks like $105,000 for a T72, completely rebuilt. Wow! Cheaper than a Ferrari. Maybe that is because after the gulf war when US M1's went through them like they were tissue paper, no one wants them anymore. Now, if you were an African dictator with no US troops anywhere close by, you might be interested

xl sir, The Indian Army still uses T-72s. They are upgraded regularly.
The Indian Army is still not fully dependent on the T-90s.

Our venture with Israel has helped in modifications of these tanks.

And especially after Battle of Basantar, the biggest tank battle, India has learnt its lesson ( Though India won the battle, it lost many tanks, thats why Pakistan still believes that they won it)
And not only Israely technology, India's DRDO has also put great effort in modification of such tanks and other equipments. Eg,IMI Tavo. When India bought IMI- Tavor for Para, it was just 65% of Zittara (DRDO modified it and named it Zittara)

Thats what The Indian Army always do.
Buy cheaper stuff. Modify it.
So know one knows what your true potential is!

If you remember, few years back, USAF pilots came to practise with IAF, the USAF's fighter planes failed infront of IAF's modified fighters (modification-again a reason why India chose Rafael)

India, who is surrounded by China and Pak, is well prepared with it's T-72s.

To answer the OP,see no reason why you should not be able to import the gas mask.Just have an excuse ready if questioned.

Fighting against then 20 year old Patton Tanks is a far cry from facing a modern tank like the Abrams. In the first Gulf War US armor destroyed T72's with impunity. There was one story in Tom Clancy's non-fiction "Armored Cav" where he talks about an Abrams stuck in shifting sands. It was engaged by two Iraqi tanks. The first one shot at it and the shell bounced off the M1's armor. The M1 then engaged and destroyed it. The second Iraqi tank then sought shelter behind a sand dune. Unable to move, the Abrams which could not see the Iraqi tank, switched on it thermal sights and was able to see the exhaust bloom from the Iraqi tank emanating over the top of the sand dune. It then fired one of its DU penetrators through the sand dune and destroyed the Iraqi tank. Yes, through the sand dune! The energy required by a projectile to penetrate a sand dune and still destroy an armored target on the other side is extraordinary.

As the force was moving on, they tired to destroy the stuck tank as they didn't want it to fall into Iraqi hands. They fired a similar DU round at the M1 which simply bounced off its armor. Then the tried to destroy it from the side where the armor was not as thick. This time the DU round caused the M1's ammo to blow up but the blow-out panels vented the explosion. They then left the tank there. When it was recovered, the only thing wrong with it was that the optics were out of alignment.

You can read "Armored Cav" here. It's worth the read. However, keep in mind that it was written in 1994.

Don't get me wrong, I am very aware of the spirit, ingenuity and capability of India's armed forces. I am also very proud of my father who was a career Indian Army Officer but comparing a T-72 (no matter how much improved) to an Abrams MBT is unrealistic.

Please remember that was an exercise not actual war. While every one knows that the Indian Air Force is an extremely professional fighting force, let's not get caught up in the jingoism present in certain Indian Defense websites. Certainly, the Indian Air force very favorably impressed the USAF in both COPE exercises.

Timmy,any tank can be destroyed.Given the right tools,you can put the same type of holes in an M 1 Abrams.

No doubt the Abrams is a far superior product when compared to a T72,however do keep in mind that history is written by the victor.

The Soviet concept of tank warfare seems to have relied on overwhelming numbers.Instead of a rag and tag army like the Iraqis,had the T 72 been used in a conflict between and Ruskis and the Americans,the outcome might not have been that one sided.

There is NO army in the world today that can hope to counter the American military muscle.So far I have not come across posts by Indian netexpertarmchaircommandoheadsuptheirass posters about Indian-American military conflict,but I have seen numerous ones from Pakistan. Indians would last for a month or so,the Pakistanis about a week,against the Americans.There would not be lot of pieces left to pick up afterwards.
