Winchester 69A Restoration project
Winchester 69A Restoration project
This "little" rifle (the quotes are because it weighs as much as my custom Mauser 98) was bought along with a Remington 1100 from a charity to whom the guns had been donated. Mark took the 100 for his eldest son to hunt with and I picked the 69A up because I wanted a second 22 and the idea of an old target model 69A was irresistible. These are known to be among the most accurate pre war 22s around.
On the whole, the rifle is in very good shape. The inletting has to be seen to be believed - I do check many rifles out every couple of weeks at the various stores here and have not seen any production rifle with the barrel and action as closely inletted as in this budget gun from the pre war years. Not everything has changed for the better, it is obvious.
There are patches of surface rust on the barrel and on the magazine as you can see in the Before pics. The wood, surprisingly, is immaculate in condition though it has no figure at all, like pre war guns could be expected not to have. The Lyman micrometer sight has seen better days but it is in good shape and nothing that a little TLC could not improve.
I hope to work on this little rifle slowly over the spring and shall post pictures of the progress on it as I get things done, stage by stage. I shall be using a Boyd's restoration kit - cheap and we bought it when Inder and I went to the Rockford gun show for just $ 9. As someone who has virtually zero experience finishing metal or wood, this is going to be an interesting pursuit for me this year. It should also tell me whether I need to try my hand at working on more expensive guns or just pay the $ 350 or so that it would cost to get them refinished at Gander Mountain.

Take your time and work on it only when you want to and in sufficient light.
Before you start on the stock, try your hand on a cube or small plank of wood. Even a few inches square will be adequate.
$350.00 (Rs.15,000.00 +) to refinish a gun? I'd have earned a fair packet even if I had charged 1/3 that amount.
Happy DIYing.
Mack The Knife
P.S.: 0000 grade wire wool and oil will remove the surface rust. Don't get too aggresive or you will remove the surrounding bluing.

LOL
Jokes apart, it's the lack of good gunsmiths that drives the people here to work on their firearms.

Mack The Knife,
I shall be working on this rifle very slowly. At the moment I really have my hands full and working on the rifle is going to be relaxation for me. Fortunately, your post showed me a way to take it easy in the evening with a glass of Scotland's finest...
Navdeep,
I do wish to buy the gun dealership that we talked about but do not have the time at the moment. I do not want to try to run this as a hands off business and hence my not having taken a decision so far. Do you want to buy it? The owner is now a good friend and if you want, I would be very happy to introduce you to him. Let me know.
Danish,
Living in the US, I can mail order any number of magazines for any of my rifles as I want to. They would arrive in the mail if I ordered with my credit card from Midway or bought them off an auction site in about 48 hours of making an electronic payment. Though I could get one for less than the price of a Coke and a MacDonalds sandwich, I prefer to redo this particular one myself, by hand, as that was my intention in buying this rifle anyway. BTW leave 10 round magazinbes aside, I could have a 30 or 100 round magazine fabricated for this rifle if I wanted that. Again, it would take me ten minutes to place an order for one, over the phone.

One has to be a connoisseur of guns, if not more than that, I would require a longgg apprenticeship and money off course need funds from brothers in arms here.
Its just that an off hand comment was made by one of the guys at range that his out of state FFL dealer friend assists him with finding guns. I was also recommended having some one pick up a long gun out of state especially in Midwest/Texas with all the choices you guys have but then issue is getting FFL dealer at both ends.
Few dealers and other gun owners I have interacted with and even the Beretta Galleria guys acknowledge and rue one thing that pool of dealers with indepth knowledge and honest is really shrinking. Even now customers given a choice prefer small gun stores over sale discounts stores Dicks with their knowledgeable staff. By any stretch this is a business with lot of responsibility legal and what not.
Enjoy working on the rifle.
Take care
OT a person at the gun dealer was narrating an experience when A bird or maybe a bat got injured while crawling into his neighbors’ living room, left pool of blood all over the place and police had to be called, detectives had to test the blood and check the house 4 hour ordeal. These guys were looking for a .22. There is a Dicks near by but its a trust factor with the dealers.
