Bhargav - if you are in India then Ruger can be tagged as semi auto and a license thats a headache. My cousin had to sell his same rifle for peanuts. Although it saved his family during 1984 Sikh riots in Haryana. Another issue in India could be quality of ammo and KF stuff getting jammed all the time..

I picked up my marlin on sale for around 135 bucks when i was buying my SKS from turners. I didn't expect much out of it when I bought it because of its price, so my initial plan was to modify its stock make it look nicer, so it was basically inexpensive project gun for me.

I went out to the angeles out door shooting range to shoot my marlin xs7and my SKS and brought along my little marlin and bought a pack of bulk 500ammo pack of federal. Out of the box accuracy of the little marlin was astounding, I ended up shooting 400 rounds of .22 that evening and I wanted more. Since then this little rifle has been my companion for every shooting range indoor or outdoor and the accuracy is unmatched for the price.

My girlfriend has a 10/22 and it by no means any lesser of a gun, and every one (except me!) would probably say that 10/22 is a better choice.

Marlin has two advantages up it's sleeve, its cost and it's out of the box accuracy.
10/22 has incredible aftermarket bells and whistles if you are into those things.

Marlin has barely any aftermarket parts, ATI offers one dragunov style stock which was made for the model 60 so you have to dremel out the cut for the magazine.

Both are extremely good rifles, but I can guarantee you will not regret buying the marlin.

P.S another thing to think about its in a rugers price you can get a marlin and a mosin nagant... and who doesn't want a mosin nagant?

Yeah the ruger has lots of aftermarket mods available but I am not into those, if the rifle works just great out of the box then I would be happy . A 22lr would be my general weekend pinker.

If you are looking at big 5, I am assuming you are in the west coast (I may be wrong), go to turners outdoorsman they have 795's for similar price still, maybe a10 bucks more than what I paid.
.22 opensights is a very important, rifle, especially if you are looking for fast target acquisitions, action shooting type events. Run your courses with your tiny little 22 and then move on to your 5.56 or 6.5G and you will see the difference.


Mosin Nagant, $100 gun which can pretty much take out any animal on the face on the planets has survived for 100 years and will probably survive for another 100 is worth buying. Even If you never fire it, buy two of them and stick it to your wall, just like old hindi movies, it's still worth it.

Ammo is not at all difficult to find, there is tons of it available online.

There is no guarantee that every 10/22 will do that but it shows what the platform is capable of. Of course, you will pay more for the 10/22 than the Marlin, which is a perfectly capable firearm in its own right. Please also note that my groups were shot with a scope and not with open sights.

Yeah but we have a used gun store here and it's kinda pawn shop as well so you find very good guns there. My first try would be to try to find a marlin in used, if not then will go for new. Maybe from buds gunshop.

Xl_target, the 10/22 is an amazing rifle but around 180 dollars more as compared to the marlin. This would be my leaning factor towards the marlin. I want to get a cheap 22lr for general plinking. My ultimate goal is to get the anschutz 54 target rifle for smallbore compititions

Thank you, I had the calculation totally messed up. At 65 meters mine will shoot a beer bottles neck off with a fixed power scope off hand. That also with KF ammo.
