Indoor/Silent pellet trap

Hi ,

I am planning to make a silent pellet trap mainly for indoor use . I am looking for material to fill .
Has any one done some thing like ? Please advice on material for filling and also availability locally ( India).

well I had made it once and I had filled it with "chindi". "chindi" is the waste cloth pieces that you find at a tailor's shop. "chindi" is a good filler for quilts as well. It worked perfect for me.

so my setup was, I had a metal box which had the paper target in front, then there was this "chindi" filled in the box and the pellet stopper was an asbestos sheet which just worked fine. I had filled the "chindi" pretty tight.

I would like to bring up a safety issue though. Asbestos, when damaged (hit with a pellet) can release microscopic fibers that can be inhaled. Asbestos fibers are know to cause Pleural Mesothelioma. Do not mess with Asbestos if you can help it. Do not expose your self and your family to it if you can help it. Please get rid of the asbestos. It can take years to see the effects of Asbestos fibers in the lungs but there is no cure for it. I had a good friend die of it and it is not a pleasant way to go.

Mesothelioma - a cancer that typically attacks the lungs and abdomen - was profoundly rare until the industrial and commercial use of asbestos expanded in the 20th century. Medical researchers have spent decades investigating the disease and what causes it, and their findings are that asbestos exposure is the primary culprit.

Through studies aimed at pinpointing the exact causes of mesothelioma, researchers gradually learned how being exposed to asbestos triggers cancer.

In March 2009, the International Agency for Research on Cancer reconfirmed that all forms of asbestos can cause mesothelioma - and asbestos exposure is the foremost cause of mesothelioma.

wow I didn't knew that. well I just used the asbestos for some time but then got rid of it and add a thick plywood behind it but yeah thanks for the info xl_target.

Plywood would be a hugely preferable backstop to Asbestos, assuming that the pellets cannot penetrate it.

XL is right on. The microscopic asbestos fibers will float in the air of a room for literally years, if there is no breeze to blow them out. In one building I worked in, the linoleum on the floor had asbestos. The company was allowed to leave the flooring in as long as it was not gouged, which would cause fibers to get into the air. I have no idea how gouges would be avoided in such an environment, but there was nothing I could do about it.

Asbestos is a good thing -- to stay away from!

Hang a three or four layers of tightly woven heavy fabric and back that up with some board. The fabric gives when the pellet hits it and swings back dissipating the pellet's energy.

The extra layers take care of these super fast pellets that these new air rifles launch. Just keep a few inches of space between each layer.

Furnishing cloth as used to make sofas works as does burlap(jute) or an old heavy bed cover.

I would like to add something. Has anyone think about coal tar block as the pellet catcher? I guess it should be most silent and effective. And can be renewed/reused as well....

Use sand.
Sand is used by army as well to shield against the enemy bullets.

If by "silent" you mean "less noise than a springer", you can go with a box stuffed with old magazines. I use a normal corrugated cardboard box (the kind you can ask your friendly neighbourhood grocer to give you for free). Cut the corners down to the thickness you need (I use typically 6-8 inches). DO NOT cut out the balance part - it can be folded over the box to provide additional protection. Stuff old magazines (not newspapers, as they tend to stuff loosely). Business Today types are better than India Today, due to the heavier paper. Pack the box, folding the excess cardboard. Tape it (I use duct tape). Hang. Stick target with tape / glue. Shoot. Check the back periodically, replace if worn.

I also tape the box to a 1/2" plywood sheet, as additional protection. 4 thick nails protrudong from the back of the ply serve as hangers to the window grill. I use a springer (SDB Model 27 in 0.22) at 5.5 meters (the length of my drawing room). I replace the box and magazines when the soft thump of pellet hitting paper is replaced by the harder thud of pellet hitting plywood.
