Books on all things "Sharp n Shiny"
Friends, Fellow IFG'ians and Cutlery Lovers;
I've been scouting the market for books on Knives, Swords, Edged Weapons for sometime now and have managed to lay my slimy paws on a few ...... Books/magazines/journals on this subject are pretty hard to find and not easily available and I've seen book stores in Mumbai, Delhi & Kolkotta !!
Since i've spent a considerable amount of time and effort in sourcing these and some very rare ones have been shared by some very knowledgeble fellow IFGians, i strongly think this data base should be shared with all those interested in the subject. I've managed to grab hold of a scanner and have started scanning these as and when time permits.
Can I with the permission of the iFG Owners and moderators upload the scans here through picassa so all can view and download, post their books reviews and have a good information exchange........
Best Regards
Moin.

Re: Books on all things "Sharp n Shiny"
These sample images are from a very rare book on Damscus Steel "On Damascus Steel by Leo S Figiel" whose photocopies I have am in the process of scanning. Some other books are
1) By My Sword & Sheild- Traditional Weapons of the Indian Warrior- by Jaiwant Paul
2) Swords- A Visual History
3) The WOrld Encylopedia Of Swords & Sabres
4) Indian and Oriental Arms & Armour by Lord egerton of Tatton
Me and one other IFG fellow member have been trying to Source GN Pants-Indian Arms and Armour and Rawsons-Indian Sword but without any success, any leads on this appreciated.
Also any other ways of sharing this, let me know. Manually scanning the books, so will take time to scan, upload & share.
Please do upload/share scans of material that other members have so all cutlery members benefit from this exercise.
P.S: Have some good pdf's as well, but not very tech savvy , any ways of uploading files without taking this websites webspace ???
Best Regards

Moin,
Please remember that excerpting information, especially scanning and posting images/facsimiles of a published book would be a violation of copyright. Manually scanning books and distributing them is also a violation of copyright. Illegal acts like this would possibly render the operators of the IFG forum liable.
Every country has copyright laws. While US laws might not apply here, India has its own copyright laws which might be similar.
Here is US copyright law:
Linking or posting a book already scanned by Google or some entity that owns the copyright and wants to give it to the public domain is a whole different matter.

Here is US copyright law:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_ ... ension_ActThe Copyright Term Extension Act (CTEA) of 1998 extended copyright terms in the United States by 20 years. Since the Copyright Act of 1976, copyright would last for the life of the author plus 50 years, or 75 years for a work of corporate authorship. The Act extends these terms to life of the author plus 70 years and for works of corporate authorship to 120 years after creation or 95 years after publication, whichever endpoint is earlier.[1] Copyright protection for works published prior to January 1, 1978, was increased by 20 years to a total of 95 years from their publication date.

Indian Copyright law:
The Indian Copyright Act today is compliant with most international conventions and treaties in the field of copyrights. India is a member of the Berne Convention of 1886 (as modified at Paris in 1971), the Universal Copyright Convention of 1951 and the Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) Agreement of 1995.
Though India is not a member of the Rome Convention of 1961, WIPO Copyrights Treaty (WCT) and the WIPO Performances and Phonograms Treaty (WPPT),the Copyright Act is compliant with it.
Duration of copyright:
Literary
dramatic,
musical and
artistic works (other than a photograph)
sixty years from the beginning of the calendar year next following the year in which the author dies.
Anonymous and pseudonymous works
Posthumous work
Photographs
Cinematograph films
Sound records
Government work
Public undertakings work
International organisations work
sixty years from the beginning of the calendar year next following the year in which the work is first published.
Copyright infringement is punishable under § 63 of the Copyright Act:
Offence of infringement of copyright or other rights conferred by this Act. Any person who knowingly infringes or abets the infringement of-
(a) the copyright in a work, or
(b) any other right conferred by this Act, shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which shall not be less than six months but which may extend to three years and with fine which shall not be less than fifty thousand rupees but which may extend to two lakh rupees:
Provided that the court may, for adequate and special reasons to be mentioned in the judgment, impose a sentence of imprisonment for a term of less than six months or a fine of less than fifty thousand rupees.
Explanation.- Construction of a building or other structure which infringes or which, if completed, would infringe the copyright in some other work shall not be an offence under this section.[3]

Noted with thanks xl_target, Was somewhat aware would be a copyright issue, but then no other way to distribute this information, even photocopying and distributing is a violation of copyright. But yes your point noted, no more posting scans or uploading files here in IFG. The intention was honestly good though....

Copyright Laws - I dont like them much now as they are. Particularly as far as sharing of information goes but, I hopefully will eventually, understand their significance once I publish my own work and then (if my work is good / worthy enough) someone scans and puts it up on the web for all to see - for free - AND I lose my royalty and cool altogether????

Books on all things "Sharp n Shiny"
An author puts a large amount of work and effort into a book - experience, research, photos and so on. By purchasing this book, you are honouring his work and thanking him for having everything in one place for you to enjoy. And by ripping copies, or free distribution, you are stealing from him. This is the simplest explanation of a copyright.ckkalyan wrote:Copyright Laws - I dont like them much now as they are. Doctorsaab; Been trying to source GN Pants-Indian Arms and Armour and Rawsons-Indian Sword. Will appreciate any leads on this. I dont't use a credit card so buying off Amazon where Rawsons Indian Sword is available second had is ruled out.
