A Victorinox Swiss Knife is the safest bet to EDC and a tool you can actually put to good use. Why would any body want to EDC a fixed blade, it's just asking for trouble.

Pretty much over with Victorinox & stuff, looking for better quality. Have 2 Victorinox knives, they are just average knives with no great edge & not cut out for hard use.

Well a fixed blade with nice holster can easily be used as an EDC gear.

I beg to differ there .32, been using Swiss Knife since last two years, the blade takes a superb edge and the edge retention's excellent and I use it for daily chores.

Not sure how you will procure it, Spyderco's Tenacious or if willing to spend more the Benchmade Griptilian are excellent folders. Please do not carry a fixed blade, unless camping or outdoors, getting caught with a mean looking Fixed Blade can get you in trouble with the Cops if caught.

You have asked a pretty open ended questions, so answers can largely vary. Please let me know the following:
* what edc tasks would you perform?
* what is your budget? Please consider shipping around the 30-35$ mark if opting for a imported blade. Typically duty may not be applied for single imports and not very costly. Do not undervalue or request the seller to undervalue, if caught goods confiscated.
* do you intend to open the knife in public glare for your tasks? This will require a gentleman's knife design, benign looking.
* any clue on the blade length? Typically sub-3 inch blades make a good edc.

Small neck knives, fixed, do make good edc but the carry options and concealment is limited. Unless your edc tasks require a strong edge, I'd say opt for a folder.

And then I should be able to suggest you a good knife.

That's a cool blade Moin!

Choombak, saw your EDC gear thread. Wish could have such beauties!
Regarding my requirements, they are pretty straight forward:
- Budget varies from 2k to 6.5k(stretched for an outstanding blade).
- Tasks would be limited to Self defence, Adventure, cutting various objects like ropes, fruits, piercing metal, can think of many! Pretty much should be able to fulfill a number of duties. This because I do not intend to buy a different blade for different tasks.
- A knife which comes with some sort of sharpening system would be great. Like Gerber LMF 2. Again don't want to buy a seperate sharpner.
- Knife should be tough as nails & hold its edge after long use.

To sum it up, need a "one knife fits all" kind-off a product.

P.S: Want to know more on Folders opening mech, locking, etc.

i have been carrying my swiss since 1986,so far it has been edc.during those days we didn't have much of a choice, grab what ever is available.
as choombak says, there seems many options these days, other than swiss knife.look carefully assess your day today work and buy accordingly.swiss knife is not a bad idea the steel is really good.
i have a friend ,a fellow ifg'an ,who can help you.in case you need,pm me.

EDC folder & fixed blade

Post by Bruno22 » Sat Nov 26, 2011 12:34 pm

The Spyderco Delica 4 just procured from my good friend Choombak has totally won me over. I currently have the Endura 4 plain edge and the Dragonfly. The Endura is a touch big and can get a few nervous glances. The Dragonfly is just too small and the version I have is serrated. The Delica is just right, enough blade to get a job done and small enough to not attract too much attention. Also the opening and closing ergonomics suits my hand much better than the Endura 4. I have had the opportunity to handle plenty of very good folders but the Delica seems to be the ultimate EDC folder in my books.
And I would never discount a Swiss knife ever. Most practical invention since the wheel!!
Currently I am EDCing the Delica, the Novatac 120p (Got to take classes to figure that out) and my trusty old Gerber suspension multi tool.
I like to always have a separate knife, folder or fixed on me at all times.

EDC folder & fixed blade

Post by Bruno22 » Sat Nov 26, 2011 5:32 pm

The Endura is not for sale Moin. My pairing is as follows, easy day the Arc AAA with the dragonfly, hard day then the Delica with the Novatac 120p and shit hits the ceiling day then out comes the Endura with the Surefire G2 Nitrolon. My deepest respects to Choombak in regards to his knowledge on EDC in terms of folders and lights.
Would like to buy some more Delicas in the future with different handle materials.
One question I would like to add to this thread and I hope it's not too off topic, but how does every one carry around all the EDC gear? I have many different pouches and rigs to carry stuff. Starting with the good old waist pouch, then some Maxpadition varsipacks and the top of the line Civilian labs shoulder harness carry system. Will try and post some pics soon.

Any blade may be used for self defense or "adventure", it is up to the defender or adventurer how well he may use it. For ropes you need combi or serrated blades, for fruits the blade should not be too thick if you intent to peel them, if the fruit is a coconut and you need to chop it then its another story :D

Piercing metal ? Like tin cans? use a Swiss army knife ; Armour? use a tanto blade; Car hoods? use a Tomahawk with a spike :D

"To sum it up, need a "one knife fits all" kind-off a product."

Not many I know which fit this description.

Edge retention: most modern day engineered steels have good retention properties.

People may give you advice and I am sure most of it will be good but in the end you will have to research and find one that you like.

Look up production knives from Benchmade, Kershaw, Zero tolerance, CRKT, Spyderco etc etc. you choose from them. They all make good Knives and I am sure they have one for you.

Not going to suggest any knives for you: its like us choosing what you should wear and how you should dress. If you have any other specific questions or need us to choose or shortlist a couple from the list you prepare then let us know.
P.S: Want to know more on Folders opening mech, locking, etc.
Both IFG and google have tons of information on this, look it up. If you are still unable to find any then I will be glad to point you in the right direction. Specific questions will be appreciated. Thanks.
