Hi Ashok,
Here is something similar that I have read in a post by xl_target. The link to the post is http://www.indiansforguns.com/viewtopic ... 79#p150679 and the original
article is http://www.gunthorp.com/Terminal%20Ball ... morgue.htm
In this article DM2 says "Unlike handguns, rifles have the velocity to drive smaller, lighter bullets deeply
into the body cavity. Expansion (and often fragmentation) is complete, and damage is magnified. Often, on x-ray a "lead snowstorm" is seen in which lead (and copper from the jacket) separates from the core and tracks tangentially from the main trajectory of the bullet. These can and often do inflict their own damage, such as opening arteries or lodging in vital organs that were completely missed by the main path of the bullet."

Now the thing that comes to my mind is that are these bullets deliberately designed so that the jacket separates from the core and it goes in some different direction to do the maximum damage or is it a blessing in disguise i.e faulty ammo doing this.Never heard of bullets designed to do so but from Ashok's and DM2's post it appears to be so. Infact it is a brilliant idea one bullet making two separate holes and therefor increases the chances to hit a vital organ. Maybe senior members here can shed some more light on this.

The lightest bullet loads, having the highest velocity, for most hunting cartridges, the so called "varmint" loads in US parlance, used for killing animals that have little or no commercial value, and are not eaten, are designed to disintegrate in the target. Almost all the US .22 centerfire loadings are of such design. In larger game they will make a large, but shallow, surface wound. By international convention, such bullets are prohibited in warfare. Nevertheless, many military bullets will tumble and may then break up in the body.
For edible game, bullets are designed to both expand to a limited extent and penetrate deeply, without destroying to much flesh. Too much expansion limits penetration, so the properties have to be balanced. Obviously not too easy to achieve, with range and impact velocity, as well as the size of game, being uncontrollable variables. Witness the many different bullet designs now on the market . In addition, there are two schools of thought, one arguing for penetration all the way through; the other for a bullet to stay in the animal, expending all its energy within its body.
For heavy, thick skinned, dangerous game, a deep penetrating bullet that can reach the vitals, a round-nosed , full-jacketed, or "solid" bullet is the choice.

And your better choice for a brand-new made-in-India rifle is...?

No better choice for a brand new handgun or rifle exists in India since Indian Ordnance Factory is the only company that is allowed to manufacture handguns, rifles and their ammunition. It is result of "socialist" policies of distrust of citizens followed by the government during the fifties to eighties. Though such policies have been disacarded in the nineties but for some mysterious reasons, the sector of arms and ammunitions has been kept untouched.

Took the .30-06 for an outing last Saturday. I had installed a new Redfield scope, after my Bushnell packed up while shooting with Safarigent. I have, of course, retained the Warne mounts and rings as I find them perfect for the recoil.

Laser sighted on a .22lr target for 50 meter match, at 115 meters/ 125 yards and let off 2 rounds of S&B 150grs. They got around 6 30 and 8 on the number 7 and 8 rings. A bit of adjustment and the 3rd shot was bulls eye! My son, while spotting, said that I had missed it completely till I told him to check once again :)

The rest of the shots all went in the 8,9 and center rings, with max about 1 inch distance. The only dampener was the farm guy tearing the target off the plywood when told to retrieve it

Redfield 3-9x40 scope, the mounts and rings are Warne and the bipod is Caldwell XLA. The spotting scope is a generic Chinese made one.

Am making a new stock out of walnut for it. Meanwhile, I have removed the plastic butt plate and am using a Pachmayr slip on pad.

Katana,

That looked like a nice outing... I am glad you could zero at about 115m with the scope. During our outing with the .30-06 babe, we couldn't get the glass of the beer bottle at nearly the same distance ! The scope was a Leapers 4x40 with the Warne scope mounts and bases... :( which led me to believe that about 150m should be the minimum distance to zero the scope in 30 cal guns... !

BTW thanks for posting pics... they indeed speak louder than words... !!

2) Winchester 150 grain http://www.winchester.com/products/rifl ... 3006A.aspx
3) S&B 180 grain Soft Point http://www.sellier-bellot.cz/rifle-ammu ... roduct=197
4) S&B 180 grain FMJ http://www.sellier-bellot.cz/rifle-ammu ... roduct=257
5) PPU, 150 grain, FMJ, Made in Serbia http://www.prvipartizan.com/search_a.php
6) KF http://ofbindia.nic.in/products/data/am ... /sc/14.htm

I own no. 1,2,3,4 and 5 from the above list. A dealer told me price of KF ammo is on par with S&B so no one buys the KF and therefor they don't order any. I once saw them with a dealer some two years ago.
